glucose concentration

Categories: Symptoms Of Diabetes

Question:

How much glucose concentration is shown that the person is diabetics?

There are three criteria that can be used to diagnose diabetes: 1.  An 8 hour fasting glucose of 126 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l). 2   A random glucose of 200 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l)     and overt symptoms of diabetes. 3   A 2 hour reading of 200 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l)     in a 75 gram Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. A single instance of any of the three must be confirmed by a second test, again of any of the three. — Charly Coughran

Basically, this has traditionally been done by measuring the blood glucose concentration under fasting conditions, specifically in the morning and when the person has not taken anything except water since the midnight before. Non-diabetics normally range between 60 to 110 mg/dl.  However, they sometimes run higher than this.  The received wisdom of the medical profession is that 126 mg/dl and higher is a sign of a possible problem.  But no single measurement of this type, unless really far higher than 125 mg/dl, should be used for diagnosis. Also, blood sugar measurements taken 1 to 2 hours after a normal meal are instructive.  Non-diabetics run up to about 140 mg/dl, but can reach as high as 150 mg/dl.  If a person consistenly tests beyond that range, depending on how high they go, they could be diagnosed as having diabetes. Still another test is the glucose tolerance test.  Here, a person is given 75 grams of glucose and their blood sugar curve is plotted with several measurements.  However, due to the many false diagnoses that I have personally observed that were based on this test, I don’t think it is realiable enough to be taken seriously unless unequivocal results happen. Another interesting measurement tool in the diagnosis of diabetes is the H1Ac.  This shows what the person’s blood sugar has been averaging over about the past month.  But here again, there are borderline cases.  My advice to borderline cases (which they call something like "people with impared glucose tolerance") is simply to sit tight and acquire a blood glucometer.  Further monitoring of blood sugar levels may reveal that it was all a false alarm, OR it could pinpoint the actual start of true diabetes, and do so in time so as to avoid really getting sick.
