Vanadyl sulfate

Categories: Diabetics

Question:

I also tried it for awhile. I used 20mg daily.  Of course, the clerk at the store thought I was buying it for bodybuilding since it should have an anabolic effect if it allows more glucose into the cells.  That was funny since I’m a slim 6′ 165 lbs Type I. There is some concern about liver damage over extended use, therefore the bodybuilders apparently "cycle" on and off.  As far as concrete results, I didn’t notice any.

Does anyone have an experience using vanadyl sulfate as a means to treat diabetes? I was just diagnosed and my local herbal guru recommended it? — Allen Weiner Larkspur, Calif. ——- Chief Analyst, Internet and Commerce Services Dataquest, San Jose, Calif. I was just diagnosed and my local herbal guru recommended it? : — There have been some literature references to its bg-lowering properties. I tried it for a while and could see not change.  It may work for type 2s.  I am a type 1, 18 years. —

Response:

Hi, any type1 diabetics here who has used Vanadyl sulfate, and if so how much did it reduce your insulin ( units of either Regular, NPH, Humalog ) if at all ? Type 2’s are welcome to respond if you think your experience with Vanadyl sulfate applies.                                                                                    Cmat

Vanadyl Sulfate is one of a number of mineral supplements that get recurring threads in the group.  Last time I did any research on the subject, the only site with which I felt confidence (that is, the only site not trying to sell me the stuff) included this statement: "Interestingly, research has concluded that vanadium seems to work in the body like insulin does, helping the body make use of sugar for energy (Moore et al.; 1992 Groff, 1995). The down side to this is that the research was done on diabetic laboratory rats and the dosages given to them which seemed helpful, overlapped with the dosages that killed them! (Bachelae, 1994) As for non-diabetic rats, vanadium did not effect them in any way (Moore, et al 1992)."   The URL is: http://www.hcrc.org/contrib/cannon/vanadyl.html   I do not trust anecdote and testimonial;  they are too easy to fabricate.  The thrust of the URL above is that there is too little evidence of recommend or condemn, but that it would be better to err on the side of caution by not using the stuff.  Personally, the evidence is far too poor for me to try it, others might be more adventuresome, but I hope they will be careful. — David Robin The Diagnoses:  sideroblastic anemia/hemochromatosis  8/98, IDDM  10/90 The Meds: NPH insulin, humalog, chelation with desferal, folic acid, pyroxidine, calcium and Vitamin E The Counts (and normal ranges):  hg: 8.4 (12-18); Ferritin: 655 (22-322); hg A1c:  7.4 (4.2-5.9)
