THE VA

That’s interesting. What were the problems you encountered? I have been thinking of going to a nearby VA medical center for treatment. Does anyone else have experience with VA care of patients with diabetes? How did (or do) you feel about it?

Well I’m a social worker for the VA. All I can say is you have to learn how to manipulate the system and enjoy waiting ! lol But we really do try……some VAs are better than others. Beanie Type 1

I receive treatment for my diabetes from the VA.. Have had excellent experience with the treatment.. Just went to see her today as a matter of fact, had a 8:40 am appoint and actually saw the doctor at 8:55. Fasting blood works shows everything normal using prescribed and provided metformin&glyburide. My only complaint is that the VA does not (in my opinion) allow for proper testing.. They provide test strips for testing twice a week for type 2 diabetics.. My case may be an exception, but I have recieved excellent service from the VA overall. The Doctors I have seen so far have been great.. Only complaint was a disagreement that I had with a new nurse, this little problem was resolved once the nurse found out that she could not run roughshod over me and my requests.. The non medical personel normally have your typical "don’t give a crap" government employee (you can’t mess with me) attitude, but you can get by them if you hang in there and stay on their butts.. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone else have experience with VA care of patients with diabetes? The VA is making an effort to focus on the importance of providing better diabetes care as approximately 14% of VA patients have diabetes. Hopefully this will result in better care for all diabetic patients at all VA hospitals. Dr. Claude Lardinois, Chief of Endocrinology at the VA Hospital in Reno has developed a diabetes standard of care guide for doctors. The guide is also useful for patients. We are happy to email a copy of the Diabetes Standard of Care PENTAD to anyone who is interested and encourage you to review the guidelines with your doctor. I am a veteran, and I assure that were I having a coronary at the front entrance of a VA hospital, I would walk or crawl to the nearest veterinary clinic. My chances of receiving something that resembled medical care would be much higher than at any VA hospital with which I am familiar. Have I ever been treated at a VA hospital? No. For many years before I was diagnosed diabetic, I was an air ambulance pilot, flying fixed wing air ambulances, and doing an incredible number of patient transfers for the VA. The stuff we saw would have curled your hair, and gave me an ongoing terror of those places.
