HbA1C Results
Question:
I don’t think my doctor is really "pushing", but I’m definitely resisting for as long as I can. Marjorie Type 2
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – This post not CC’d by email When I was first diagnosed, my results were 7.3%. The doctor sent me to a dietician and we worked up a plan for diet and exercise. 3 months later, my HbA1C was 6%, where it stayed for the next year. Under those conditions, my doctor said if I kept it up, I could possibly stay off meds for 20 years (I was 35 when diagnosed). Late last year, my BGs went way up, I think mostly due to stress from a job change and financial problems. My endo wanted to put me on meds (my HbA1C was 8.8%), but I asked her to give me 3 months to try get it under control. My next result was 7.5, a big improvement. She did not mention meds again at that time, so I guess it was a joint decision
Marjorie Type 2 Thanks Marjorie for your helpful reply. We often have posters who have been told they are borderline diabetics or some such similar. It helps to know more about how doctors and patients interact in deciding whether or not to start oral meds. Who, if either, is pushing or resisting? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi! I’m Marjorie, Type 2 for 5 years. I got my results from my blood test at the endo today and it was 6.5%. My last 3 prior HbA1C results were 7.5, 6.4 and 6.3. I control using diet and exercise. I enjoy reading the newsgroup and hope to contribute more in the future. What’s your lab’s normal range (it varies from lab to lab)?

Marjorie (I’m using my husband’s email) Congratulations Marjorie, I notice that you are using diet and exercise. Is it OK to ask whether that was your decision or your doctors not to use oral medication? I’m just curious to know how such decisions are arrived at in the real world. In my case my GP recommended it and it seemed like a good idea so I didn’t question it. — Quentin Grady ^ ^ / New Zealand, #,#< [ / / "… and the blind dog was leading." http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/quentin
