Fed up with trying to find correct foood
Question:
Yes, since most people’s insulin needs don’t necessarily run at a 70/30 ratio. Sometimes righ, many times wrong. Best suggestion is to get the 2 insulins, R or Actrapid, and N or ? (sorry, forget the English names), and take them as needed for the day, not some generality that’s easier for a doctor to prescribe. I changed to Humalog and Humalin I (Isophane), is that the equivalent to what you were using Ted.
Yes, I think so. Myself, whenever I hear from anybody taking 70/30 or some other fixed ratio insulin, I ask why do they want hypos and when will they fid a doctor who understands diabetes???? Of course this may not be so east with your NHS. From my and Beavi’s experiance, it looks more like you need to do your own research to see if MDI might suit you.
This isn’t even necessarily MDI. I used to take a combined shot in the AM of R + N, and likewise in the PM. Not really MDI, just reasonable use of 2 separate insulins. You then have to convince the Nurse or Dr to let you try it if you decide you want to. Not yet met a Diabetic in my area that was told of an insulin other than Mixtard (dont doubt it happens in some areas)
Glad I don’t live there. Ted Quick

Hi Parakai, <snip Smoking – a big problem really. A big probelm anyway. Not good at all for us diabetics.
Absolutely. I was told that smoking was certain death by 40 for diabetics (fortunately never touched tobacco in my life). That might be an exaggeration, or an understatement, but the bottom line is don’t smoke. Dose – sounds like it’s just too high. I take it you’re on Insulatard or Mixtard? If you don’t mind needles, have you considered changing to 4 injections per day (intensive treatment)? It’s a lot more flexible and I have a lot fewer hypos now I’m on it. Ask your doctor about it.
Only thing I’d say is that I was having this trouble, but I dropped the dose significantly and now on Mixtard 30 (70/30 NPH/Reg), twice a day, I rarely get pre-prandial readings above 7mmol/l (126mg/dl), and am generally pretty close to 6 – presumably because when honeymooning the pancreas still does a good job of keeping control, and with very few hypos. At the moment I’m not on MDI simply because my control probably can’t get much better and so it isn’t worth bothering with. Oh and before the rest of the group tells me to go on to MDI, don’t worry – I will. My doctor has already mentioned it, but I’m fine on my current regimen for the moment, so he doesn’t see any reason to change just yet. Clicks on Novopen – pretty precise.
Certainly mine is spot on. I’ve checked mine, watching it for each click. Maybe if you turn that dial fast it isn’t, but I’d suggest you check your pen to see if it is accurate, and check your dose before injecting. <snip I use novopen 3.0 are you saying the clicks are inaccurate as i experience 3 hypos a day even though i am graduallly reducing my insulin intake as i normally do the readings over 4 days and decided wether or not to drop by 2 a day, ie previous 18 for breakfast now 16, and 18 for tea now 14 and still getting hypos. how long does the honeymoon period last.
As I said above exactly this happened to me. Phone up your adviser and see what they say – they may tell you to drop it by a fair bit if you keep on having hypos. My honeymoon has been going on a good couple of months, and from what I’ve heard can last as long as 18 months (though that seems to be very rare). I also recall hearing that the later you develop type 1 the longer the honeymoon generally is, so you may have a longer than average one. — Edd

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I notice that you refer to the UK, if so you may be on a 70/30 mix like Mixtard seems very popular here. I was on this for just 6 weeks and at the end of it I suffered I think it was 7 Hypos in just over a week. I have spoken to 2 other people on the same insulin and they have had similar experiences with Hypo’s, just wonder if it is something that come with the insulin? Hi Parakai, Don’t forget about punctuation it helps to make you sound like you are not talking continuously and just carrying on without even capital letters especially single i’s and other things like verbs in sentences which make news difficult to read? Booze – not a problem really, don’t drink on an empty stomach or get so pissed that you can’t test and act accordinly. Smoking – a big problem really. A big probelm anyway. Recently diag as a type 1 diabetic, and not finding it very funny at all, as i am 36 and never been unfit or ate bad food, did enjoy occasional beer approx 6-12 units per week(Uk) do smoke lots and enjoy an active life working with radioactive units.
