eye bleeds

Categories: Diabetics

Question:

Has anyone here had a really severe eye bleed from the newly grown fragile blood vessels in the eyes? I had my first one a month ago and it shows little signs of dissipating. Getting used to life with one eye is more difficult than I thought. Especially with two children. I read somewhere where it can take years for the eye to clear up if ever. You would think there would be some kind of eye drops or pills or something they could give a person to try to speed up the process a little. The Dr. told me surgery at this time is too risky and dangerous. Many thanks!

Response:

nightowl I think it depends on the person and the severity of the bleed.  I had a minor bleed about 3 years ago and then a major in my left eye about 6 months later.  The very next day I a major bleed in my right eye.  My left eye totally blocked on me, but the right one always left me some sight.  I waited for them to dissipate for about 9 months before I had my first surgery on the left eye (won’ attempt to spell it since I butchered it so bad the last time), and about three months later it had another bleed which again resulted in total blindness in the left eye.  I had the surgery performed again about 6 months later (May of 2002), and so far that has effective.  The right one which always allowed me some sight bleed again on me in September of this year, but still formed around the outside of the eye allowing me some sight and it is now starting to clear up. All surgeries can be dangerous and this is not exception, but I did not find it that bad of a surgery.  Are you seeing a retina specialist……if not see one and don’t rush into the surgery if you don’t need it.  Give it a chance. With the left eye, I did not believe I had an option, but the right eye (which started out with as large a puddle of blood as the left), has never been a serious thought on having the surgery. Bob

Your Dr. is right. If you can’t see out, he probably can’t see in well enough to aim the laser. It normally takes several months before he can accurately do the laser surgery. Over the last 15 years I’ve had the sugeery 4 times in my left eye and 3 times in my right eye with no complications. At 70 years old my vision is 20-30 in one eye and 20-25 in the other, both correctable to 20-20. Most non diabetics can’t see any better at the same age.—Herb F. T-2 1960
