Cochrane Report – Conclusions

Categories: Diabetics

Question:

The review has dispelled many of the myths that are told to people with diabetes. * It can no longer be said that ‘human’ insulin is better than animal insulin, because there is no evidence for this. * It can no longer be said that ‘human’ insulin gives better control and better HbAlcs, there is no evidence for this. * It can no longer be said that ‘human’ insulin produces less antibodies, there is no evidence to support this. * The existence of other adverse effects, apart from hypoglycaemia, was not even investigated, so their existence can no longer be denied. Important issues for people treated with insulin have never been investigated Perhaps the greatest importance of this review is that it highlights the research that has NEVER been carried out. This absent research is essential for us to know that we are being treated with the insulin that produces the best effects on our health, our wellbeing and indeed our lives and even our life expectancy. I researched a few months ago, and Lantus was very expensive, rDNA and Bovine about the same, and Porcine the least expensive by about 40%. That is not necessarily true any more, nor is it necessarily true in Canada or the USA. It might be worth having a look at Laboratorios (sp?) prices.

Al……. it’ s about $65/vial for Humalog or any of the "human" formulation per month! folks, and only 1 of 2 insulin’s) so, from $24/mo to $200/mo in 16 yrs…… i think they beat the inflation rate by a few % points i haven’t been able to order pork insulin thru my pharmacy in 3 years, although i have been assured from people outside of Canada that it is in fact still available kate

There is a report in the April IDDT news letter (it is not on there website yet) saying one of the reasons Lilly state that chemists are unwilling to order pork insulin’s is that they are afraid that they will be stuck with them if the person who orders them does not collect them. Can not of heard of pay upfront ;-) Of more help to you there is two Email address’s given that may be able to help you. people find a source for the insulin. Also I believe Wilbill knows Americans who are importing CP Pharmaceuticals who have a decent range of animal insulin’s. DaveT — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Either they lied, which I don’t think is likely, or their catalogues are inaccurate (or supplied by Lilly or Novo). Novo still make Pork Actrapid, Pork Insulatard, though the inside word is they will stop both by the end of this year. CPP provide Pork Neutral, Pork Isophane, and a Pork/Beef premix. That is a certainty. I’ve seen them. I know people on Isophane and Pork Actrapid in my home town, and Su in this NG uses Isophane (and Neutral, iirc). Go to it, my love! And IDDT have a page on their website giving you the full Cochrane Report, worth printing out and showing your Doc. Al. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – kate

The main thing that I believe does come out of the report is to beware of all research until you know were it has come from (in most cases this is not immediately obvious). The main trouble is that the report makes such a long read that I can understand why some read half and come to a different point of view than what is actually written also the synopsis can also be misread if just skimmed over.
