Question:
I recently missed a couple meals because I did not feel like eating or fixing food. I felt even worse, so just before I started a nap, I checked my BG and found it 67 or so. This scared me into not missing a meal, but what can I do to be sure I will wake up again, as I live alone. What do you do to protect from BG going down too far while asleep. What should my BG be at bedtime or what should I take or eat. Thanks. I won’t miss any meals again, thats for sure. But I need to know if I should eat anything special at night or what a safe BG would be so I will wake up. Dan P
Response:
67 is not that low. Non-diabetics are often in the 60’s. As my BG’s have gotten better, I have found that 60s do not bother me at all. When they were out of control I would get hypo symptoms at 75. If you are not T1 and/or insulin dependent, do not worry too much about overnight hypos. As for meals… eating many small meals a day is better in the long run as you’ll keep your BGs on an even keel. Agreed, 67 isn’t really that low unless you’re taking insulin and could possibly be headed for a hypo. In fact, I sometimes check my non-diabetic mother and she’s regularly 67, 75, etc. Those kind of numbers would be of more concern for me if I might be headed to hypo-land. However, if you’re not on insulin or glucotrol I wouldn’t worry bout it.
Response:
I am insulin dependent and I never go to bed lower than 100. Good luck.
