Ammonia

Categories: Diabetics

Question:

Excess protein actually can cause ammonia toxins. Before deciding more/less carbs, checkout blood sugars at more frequent intervals before and after workouts.  That’s your guide.  Yes, exercise for most people uses more carbohydrates and you need to be careful to avoid lows. Most reputable studies for excerise and particularly bodybuilding do not show a different nutritional requirement for the atheltes versus others in terms of what percent of your diet should be protein, fat, carbs, etc.  Of course there are studies showing that athletes burn more calories, carbs, proteins, etc. but the percentage of food intake that proteins or carbs make up doesn’t change.  There are also studies showing that protein or other deficiencies mean bad athletic performance and an inability to build muscle — but those types of deficiencies are extremely, extremely rare and frequently part of a medical condition. Please check with your healthcare professionals before taking potentially toxic amounts of protein or other supplements.  What a healthy person might excrete could be extremely hard on the diabetic’s kidneys and other organs.

Don’t know how reliable this link is, but it says ammonia odor is caused by eating too much protein. http://www.drmirkin.com/morehealth/8831.html As for eating more carbs before, I should think it would depend on how your BG is.  Unfortunately, we diabetics can’t carb load as some people do. — Type 2 http://www.redshift.com/~juliebove/
