I’ve been mostly off of dairy for about 4 weeks now.  Last Friday, our site manager took the whole group to an ice cream place.  I had part of a scoop of non-fat yogurt.  It is quite clear now that milk is a problem for me.  It took until Monday to feel normal again.  Bleah. My doctor wanted me to go off of dairy for a minimum of 6 weeks to see if there was truly any effect.  Guess I shouldn’t have cheated….  :-) I’m also reading "Irritable Bowel Syndrome & the Mind-Body/Brain-Gut Connection" by William B. Salt II, M.D.  I’ve also had Andrew Weil’s book "Natural Health, Natural Medicine: A Comprehensive Manual for Wellness and Self-Care" recommended to me.  Dr. Salt’s book explains elimination diets quite well. Good luck with cutting out dairy.  You’ll be amazed at all of the places that dairy appears. Karin — Karin Dietterich k…@teleport.com Cruise of the Bells to Alaska, July 1998

Have you told the doctor about that one… I know they haven’t been alot of help.  I don’t know if it is serious, but it sounds like the kind of new symptom that might need a new set of poking and proding.  (I’m concerned cause a friend of mine had a uncle that got like that and it ended up being serious) Don’t think I’ll join you on the elimination thing though.  I seem to be generally food intolerant. eat food, any food=pain.  My stool consistancy seems more related to my allergies than my food intake.  When they are in remission i can even eat beans, beans, the musical fruit without problems <sigh> In the days of swine and roses kmot…@aol.com co-moderator alt.recovery-dead-splatted-aliens

Karin, have you ever tried Lactase or other lactose enzyme supplements?  I am lactose intolerant, but taking these things definitely make symptoms go away for me.  I carry a bottle with me all the time.  I take more than the recommended dosage, depending on what I eat.  I now know what I can handle, and how much.  Just a thought. good luck, SC – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Karin Dietterich wrote: > In article <1998032712452200.HAA28…@ladder01.news.aol.com>, > GriffKim <griff…@aol.com> wrote: > >I’m brand new to this group but I was diagnosed when I was 10, I’m 31 now. > >I’ve been poked and prodded, and well, I’ve been categorized in the huge abyss > >of ibs.  This year I do a new trick, I vomit when constipated.  I shrug my > >shoulders to this thing since almost every doctor just keeps subscribing pills. > > I’m contemplating investigating, on the suggestion of my chiropractor, the > >affects my body has on dairy, wheat and meat.  I haven’t started, but I’m > >supposed to cut out dairy for a week, and see if there is any improvement in > >regularity, cramping, vomiting, etc. etc.  Anyone want to join me in > >eliminating these things gradually over time to see what happens? > I’ve been mostly off of dairy for about 4 weeks now.  Last Friday, our > site manager took the whole group to an ice cream place.  I had part of a > scoop of non-fat yogurt.  It is quite clear now that milk is a problem for > me.  It took until Monday to feel normal again.  Bleah. > My doctor wanted me to go off of dairy for a minimum of 6 weeks to see if there > was truly any effect.  Guess I shouldn’t have cheated….  :-) > I’m also reading "Irritable Bowel Syndrome & the Mind-Body/Brain-Gut Connection" > by William B. I’m brand new to this group but I was diagnosed when I was 10, I’m 31 now. I’ve been poked and prodded, and well, I’ve been categorized in the huge abyss of ibs.  This year I do a new trick, I vomit when constipated.  I shrug my shoulders to this thing since almost every doctor just keeps subscribing pills.  I’m contemplating investigating, on the suggestion of my chiropractor, the affects my body has on dairy, wheat and meat.  I haven’t started, but I’m supposed to cut out dairy for a week, and see if there is any improvement in regularity, cramping, vomiting, etc. etc.  Anyone want to join me in eliminating these things gradually over time to see what happens? -Kim

My 15 year old granddaughter has IBS related to stress.  She has gone to several classes to learn to relax, but does not have this mastered yet.   Julian Wilkinson <v…@dial.pipex.com> wrote in article <6e0oea$qi…@plug.news.pipex.net>… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hey there, > I am new to the group and have discovered that I have had IBS for some time, > and the Docs have finally told me… > There are more tests to be done etc. > But is there anyone else out there who has stress related IBS like me? > And what on earth do ya do about it?? > Just wanted to talk and what not, cos I get pretty depressed / alone with > this – Cos no one else knows why etc… > Thanks anywayz > Laterz > Jules

It is quite common, you are not alone. >And what on earth do ya do about it??

Various things.  Finding a support group where you can talk about it is one.  There are various relaxation techniques, biofeedback, Cognitive Behavioural techniques that can be used. There are various places that do this kind of stuff.  My local hospital has a Med-Well program that offers these kinds of things.  Ask the doctor, they should know what is available.  Low doses of antidepressants sometimes seem to help with pain and stress management, and are used fairly often with IBS with sucess in some people. Things like Tai Chi, yoga, meditation can be useful as well. >Just wanted to talk and what not, cos I get pretty depressed / alone with >this – Cos no one else knows why etc…
