Need Carb Counting Book

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone know of a good carb counting book?  I’m looking for one that shows pictures of various foods, like a plate of pasta, and gives the carb amount.  Not a verbal discussion or list of carbs (those I can look up).  I’ m talking about for foods that can’t be practically measured (like pasta on a plate in a restaurant).  I would like a book that shows more of how to look at something and ‘guesstimate’ the carbs.  I had a dietitian that did some of this with me, but I need a refresher, and more guidelines would be helpful. Thanks for any input! Antonio in Los Angeles Age 37, Type 1 for 10 years Paradigm 512

I don’t think that pictures would help much – you really need to go by weight.  Many of the standard books in any bookstore will give you numbers for the chain restaurants.  I would stay away from any strange place unless you have something to go by. It is possible that a call to the place in advance could give you the info you need.  If not, I would not eat there. Speaking only for myself, Joe Durusau

I have not seen any books that show photos of "measured" portions.   All the books I’ve seen over the years show photos for one purpose, presentation.  If you actually find something like this let us know. One of the best carb counting books I have found is the one sold at http://www.calorieking.com it also includes 80 fast food chains and restaurants.  With a little practice at home there is nothing stopping you from learning how to eyeball portions.
