My old cat keeps waking me up

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

David, it sounds as though your cat may be developing kidney problems. This is a very common problem with older cats, but it needs treatment. There is special "prescripiton" food available from the vet, as well as a crude form of dialysis that is available from the vet.  Mind you, i am not a vet, but I have seen this in an elderly cat I had.  And that was the diagnosis and the solution.  Whatever, the problem is, take him to the vet for a full workup.  A kidney problem should show in his bloodwork.  And you might suggest this to the vet and see what s/he thinks.  It is not that expensive to take care of, but it is not free either.  Your cat can live a full, active healthy life with this problem if it is taken care of. Good luck, Tracy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sylvester is about 15 years old, and has been showing his age lately.  He rarely wants to go outside anymore, and usually hides in some inaccessible place around bed time. No big deal, but around 2:00 or so he goes into the kitchen and starts meowing very loudly.  He has plenty of food and water, so that can’t be it.  My wife or I usually go in there and put him outside. He is also drinking and urinating more, and rarely wants to go outside.  He would always go to the door when it was potty time, but about 6 months ago, he started having accidents. We got him a litter box, and he likes that fine.  He also seems to meow very loudly around the house at times for no apparent reason.  He can still jump up on the couch and seems to get around OK, but maybe he is in pain?  He has also lost a few pounds in the last few months. What’s with the meowing, particulary late at night.

First, I agree with everyone who said it’s time for a check-up for Sylvester.  At that age, you should be having blood tests twice a year. And when he cries late at night, go get him and put him in bed with you.  He’s lonely, and he probably has trouble hearing.  He wakes up in the middle of the night to find a silent house, so he meows to get you to come and rescue him.  :3  Bless his little heart.  I hope he’s OK. Try not putting him outside.  A very old male cat might have a very tough time outside.  He certainly can’t defend territory as well and could (I imagine) easily be chased away or eaten.  Notice any wounds? Cats require a lot of attention, mine does anyway, she’s always indoors.  Maybe he’s lonely.  That he might be in pain makes sense too.  Hope you find a solution.   LShaping.

My cat who was 16 when he died, did a lot of the things your cat does.  Meowing at night was one of the things that bothered me the most, but the outcome for him was not very good.  I, like the other people, suggest you take him to the Vet.  Our cat had cancer of the liver and had some pain causing the meowing. Sure sounds like Mandu right before she was diagnosed with diabetes.  We didn’t allow her outside, though, so your cat is being exposed to other stray cats that may be diseased, may be eating dead birds, etc.  I sure hope you get him checked out ASAP.  Mandu was 16 when she was diagnosed and had one more very good, happy year before she died.  Sylvester can live with diabetes – I hope you can live with the responsibilities involved.  Best of luck to you!  :   SAN ANTONIO SPURS     :  :lmg  _  Laura M. how about taking him to the vet for a check up. he is getting older so it is probably a good idea to do it more often, but he may just be ready to slow down and take things more easy. either way he should be checked out, he will need a diet directed more towards older cats and the vet can give you good ideas on how to prevent some of the illnesses that older cats face. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sylvester is about 15 years old, and has been showing his age lately.  He rarely wants to go outside anymore, and usually hides in some inaccessible place around bed time.
