Metmorfin

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

There are other drugs, I am on Met myself and have got on with it (although I do get the ‘classic’ flatulence problem), but I know there are others as I was talked through this when first diagnosed. As I don’t know can I please ask some (potentially dumb) questions: Are you checking your BG levels are the rights times? (ie just before meals and two hours after was what I was recommended)? Although your hours are unstable, could you possibly stabilise when you eat?

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have recently been diagnosed type 2. I was told to check my BG every day, the reading varied from 5 up to 16 and it could be very low one day and very high the next. I now check my BG 2-3 times a day and the readings are the same, mornings usually 6-7 midday about 10  and eves  quite high 14+.  I have been using Metmorfin, which puts me to sleep within 10 mins, and gives me bad (both amount and smell) flatulence. My doctor has said that Metmorfin is the only drug available and I should persevere. I am an HGV driver – hours are very unstable, some days start at 4am till maybe 6pm or could start at 8am till 10pm. Always feel tired on long hauls and I am getting worried about my licence – no licence -no job! Can anyone give me some pointers – please!!

He’s talking crap about ti being the only drug available. There are plenty of alternatives – see http://www.diabetes.org.uk/products/tablets.htm My guess is it’s the cheapest, and/or the one he knows most about, & he can’t be bothered looking into the alternatives. Could be time for a serious chat with your doc, and possibly a change of doc! Not sure about the sleepiness being caused by Metformin though – it may just be a result of the high BGs. Good luck! Rob

I was taken off Met and put onto Rosiglitazone just before Xmas – fairly new, but works in the same way apparently! When I contacted the DVLA, I wasa told that T2s on medication didn’t have any restrictions, but that was for a normal car licence. Only way to find out for sure is contact the DVLA (and that usually means writing to them). You could ask Diabetes UK as well. Dave FROM ADDRESS HAS SPAM TRAP – CLICK REPLY TO EMAIL

Hi David, My first pointer is bin that lying shit of a doctor. There are several meds, Metformin, Actos, Avandia to reduce insulin resistance Tolbutamide, Gliclazide to push your beta cells a bit and that`s nowhere near a complete list. Second,is it possible to reaarange your driving hours to more regular pattern? That might make a big difference. Al.
