Metaclopramide

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

Hi, I have a three year old Havanesse dog that has had gastro-intestinal problems as well as liver and kidney problems. The vet has prescribed Metaclopramide to help him stop vomiting. Can any one tell me more about this drug and what some of the side affects are? Thank You Allan Sparks

Response:

Metaclo is used in humans with GI and diabetes problems. It causes the stomach to evacuate thus reducing likelihood of vomiting. Effective but in people it has one serious side effect; about 1/3 develop irreversible tics – I guess the same can occur with dog. Does your vet have any idea as to what is causing this problem?
