Is portion control dieting or not?

Question:

 After reading some of the comments that was made in the thread "Whats is the nicest thing people have said about your losing weight?" I thought this may me a good topic. If you look at lets say the food prymid it tells us how many serving of each food group we should have and what size each serving should be. So if a person followed that and made that a lifestyle I don’t feel you are necessarly dieting. In our country people think bigger is better. We order "supersize at mcdonalds" and we think getting and "all you can eat buffet" is real deal. How many of you have heard this comment "boy they lost money on me"?  I have by my brother in law and he actually says it  with pride. The happy meal is more what an actual serving is even for and adult. If you start reading on bags of chips, pop cans, Ice cream and any other kind of food you can think of, if it’s healthy or not, and see what a serving size is. On most pop cans it is 2 servings and the big 20 oz bottles is almost 4. Most chips is around 15 per serving. And Ice cream is 1/2 cup not 1/2 gal. So no portion control to me is not dieting, "IT’S EATING WHAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN EATING ALL ALONG" Before I got caught up in the Supersize world. And yes even though my common sense tells me this I to I’m still guilty of trying the occassional fad diet. At this time I’m trying to lose by increase portein and lowering carbs. I’ve only been on it for 10 days and I hate it. I had been practicing portion control for the last 8 months and even though I was losing slowly 247/217/135. I found it easier. And I didn’t feel deprived of anything. I eat anything I feel like. Just instead of ordering from the adults menu I order from the child’s most of the time.  I love ice cream so I buy the low fat yogurt and eat a "SERVING SIZE".  My husband wanted to try it for 2 weeks to see if he could lose a little so I am. I’ll stick it out with him. But after the two weeks I said I’d do it with him for support, I’m back to my portion control. — Message posted via http://www.weightadviser.com

Portion control is the worst thing about dieting though I can understand why some people want to delude themselves into the thought that it’s not. It’s making life easier. Or not.

Doug — We’ve had Japanese foreign exchange students visit us and they laugh at the portion sizes of the chips in our stores, and also the portion sizes given us un restaurants. (Also, everyone of the female foreign exchange students has been impressed with Coolwhip, but I don’t know what that’s the case.) Japanese weight (and diabetes rates) increased when Japanese immigrants moved to Hawaii and thereafter to the mainland US. The longer they’re here, the move overweight they become. I sure agree with your observation. Yours, Caleb

Doug — I sure agree with you about portion sizes! Bagels the size of frisbees, etc. If portion creep continues, soon bagels will be the size of Volkswagens.

When my Japanese friends visit the U.S. they are shocked by the portion sizes in American restaurants. doug

Yes indeed – portion control (reduced caloric intake) coupled with exercise is the most common sense approach to weight loss. And, as you pointed out, it provides you with the most variety so you can avoid feeling deprived of entire food groups.     To me, dieting is eating less calories than a person is burning off.  To do this effectively, portion control is a must.  I think that many manufacturers do give unrealistic portion sizes so that their nutrition labels look better.  A two pack of twinkies, for example, lists itself as two servings, though I’ve never seen anyone crack one open and find a friend to share the other serving with.     To lose weight, you have to eat less calories than you burn off, and to do that, you limit your portions in one way or another.  It might turn out that you have to eat less of certain things than the makers of the food put on their label, or more of some things in some cases. — Annie As of 8-26-05: 258/210.5/140  Standing at 5 foot 4. 47.5 pounds lost.  70.5 left to go.  Started February/07/05 Come visit my weight-loss web site, Annie Takes Off. http://webpages.charter.net/lenny13/DietFrontPage.html
