Help!!! Dalmation owners

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

My sisters 6yr old Dalmation was diagnosed with diabetes in the past month.  Pistol is now nearly blind, and has lost a great deal of weight.  When my sister took her to the vets complaining the dog was frantic for water they reapetedly sent her away for other ailments. When a vet finally tested her dog her blood sugar level intially was exceeding 650 (off the charts). The last time he checked it was around 350.  Pistol gets 15 units of beef/pork insulin twice a day.  Is there anyone that knows of anything we can do to help Pistol?

It is vitally important to first get Pistol’s diabetes under good control.  Then, his food intake must be tightly controlled.  No snacks, no leftovers no nothing outside what has been calculated for him.  Most dogs do extremely well on insulin once they’re disease is controlled and if their owners are religious in monitoring the dog’s intake.  He must never run loose.  Food must never be left out where he might get into it. They must also monitor his blood sugar. It’s interesting to note that dogs figured significantly in the research done by Banting and Best at the University of Toronto in the discovery of insulin for the treatment of diabetes.  Many dogs were sacrificed in the process.  But now, many thousands of dogs lives are saved by insulin.  Not to mention people too :-) My uncle was one of the very first people on whom insulin was tested by Dr Banting.
