One comment that the lancet poked a big hole and it needs to, there’s a lot of blood needed. This is not like a home glucose test. So there is more pain. The price isn’t outrageous, it would probably cost more at the doctor’s office. Jude I just checked my last bill from the doc and the A1C at his place was $25 and covered under the insurance (20% copay so it cost me $5) I don’t have insurance, so it would cost me for the "lab work" — the drawing of the blood, for the test, and for the doctor to read it. So it would cost me at least $50 for the test plus $20 in transportation and several hours of my time. A home test is a bargain for me. I guess thats part of how my health team works. i go in every three months they draw blood- i missed the $2.50 blood drawing fee(which for some reason is covered 100%), and I call back later and they give me the answer. No doc involved. he just wrote a standing lab order good for a year on a quarterly A1C, lipid profile, and liver profile. Also a whole blood workup chemistry etc once a year. Everything is done in their own on sight lab or I can use the hospital lab. If anything in the report comes back abnormal i make an appointment to see him. If i need an appt for other things, he usually reviews the blood work and comments then. I guess one of the benefits of a small city/town is that nothing is too far away. BTW the local diabetes education dept conducts monthly finger prick screenings and twice yaerly A1C screening for anyone in town who wants it done.

The only "home" kit available is one where you spot some blood and mail it into a lab for processing. It probabl;y won’t be covered by insurance, it will take a couple weeks to get and answer, and an A1C at my doc’s was cheaper than the home test anyway.
