frequent urination?

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

[Sorry if this gets posted twice, but it was weird: it appeared in the list, when I first posted it. Then it appeared with an x through it and said "no longer available" when I clicked on it, then it disappeared completely. ( I use Free Agent newsreader.)] Anyway, here’ s my problem: I feel like I have to urinate all the time. Especially when I drink water, coffee, or beer. I feel I have to urinate a lot, even if when I go, only a little urine comes out. I only urinate once during the night – at one time it was up to 2-3 times, but that has gone down to 1. But my daytime urination has increased. Sometimes like once an hour, or twice an hour, for several hours, even when I’m not drinking that much liquid. I’m 48, have had my prostate checked both digitally and via psa. Doc said, "Probably a little enlarged, but no problem." I do feel some discomfort, sporadically, in an area kind of behind and my nuts. Been tested for diabetes. What else could this be, and what can I try? I’m going in for an estradiol and t check following my recent use of t-gel (3 months). But I’ve had this problem before starting on t-gel. Also, occasionally I feel some burning when I urinate, but again, I’ve been checked for infection, nothing showed up. This usually occurs after sex, even masturbation. (no use of gels, oils, etc – just the unadorned hand). Any ideas? What should I have tested?

Trout Mask Replica writes [Sorry if this gets posted twice,

I am answering on the 2nd post as you gave a bit more info here. I have listed several seemingly unrelated factors here that may come into play. Anyway, here’ s my problem: I feel like I have to urinate all the time. Especially when I drink water, coffee, or beer.

Back off on coffee and soda, it won’t hurt and it might help.  That caffeine ain’t doing you any good. Heck, beer is supposed to make you pee, you don’t buy it, you just rent it! I feel I have to urinate a lot, even if when I go, only a little urine comes out.

Enlarged prostrate or infected prostrate OR NOT EJACULATING OFTEN enough  can cause this. I only urinate once during the night – at one time it was up to 2-3 times, but that has gone down to 1. But my daytime urination has increased. Sometimes like once an hour, or twice an hour, for several hours, even when I’m not drinking that much liquid.

Now that may be a clue. Are you taking any medications JUST BEFORE bedtime that might make you retain water?  Do you eat a lot of salt for supper? Do you eat any foods that have nitrite (not nitrate) in them.  Many restaurant salid bars use nitrite as an anti-wilting agent to keep food looking fresh.   Maybe one person in 10 is sensitive to nitrite and the long time delay causes them not to associate the food with the problem.  For night water retention, you would have to get the nitrite (if you are sensitive) at breakfast or your noon meal.   Try changing your food habits for a week and see if it changes your problem. Also, occasionally I feel some burning when I urinate, but again, I’ve been checked for infection, nothing showed up. This usually occurs after sex, even masturbation. (no use of gels, oils, etc – just the unadorned hand).

Another cause for burning  (besided an infected or  enlarged prostate) is dehydration.  Could something you are taking at night make you retain water at night and then dehydrate during the day. Some people with an enlarged prostate (I was one) will drink LESS water to avoid the trips to the bathroom and the increased consentration of the urine makes them go to the bathroom more often.   That is the exact opposite of what they are attempting to do.   Try drinking more water during the day, but not at bedtime.  You can judge if you are dehydrated by the color of your urine.  If it is dark, drink more water. Ignatz, Thanks a bunch for all the info. I’m not taking any medication at night, but I have backed off water, as you said, to stop the frequent urination, so I’ll try drinking more water during the day. Also do use salt, so I’ll stop using it for awhile. Not enough ejaculations is definitely not a problem. And I’ve been tested for infection, no problems there. I’m definitely going to bring it up to my doc when I see him in March.
