effects of acupuncture?
Question:
hi all, i didn’t see anything in the FAQ, so here goes. i went to an acupuncturist to see if it would help with some other things i’m dealing with (it did, in some way, long story) but anyhow, as far as i can tell, there was some side effect in regard to my diabetes. things weren’t terribly wonderful beforehand, but now things are even more wonky – in a good way, i guess. i seem to have gotten more efficient in utilizing insulin. i can’t give you any hard numbers, but there’s just unusual things sometimes – going low and there’s no good reason for it. perhaps the treatment dealt with some underlying stress and now that factor’s no longer a factor? i can’t state any hard science, need to do some googling, and as you know, acupuncture works on the theory of qi, etc which modern day Western medicine finds laughable. but the acupuncturist said she’s seen this sort of effect several times over the years and it’s known about in the acupuncture circles. I was just wondering if anyone here has comes across any info, as i never really have either in the past 15 years. Perhaps i should learn Chinese so i can read their medical studies.
But i haven’t looked too hard in the way of alternative treatments over the years, despite finally wising up to the fact i generally knew more than the doctors at the HMO did…. yeah, if i kept better track of myself, etc before and after this acupuncture treatment, i’d have something more definite. but after 15 years, i still haven’t gotten used to the science experiment facets of dealing with diabetes….. no, i know what to do, i just hate science experiments doug

Doug, I went to PubMed and typed in diabetes and acupuncture in the search, and came up with 53 articles. Most of them have abstracts in English. I didn’t have time to look at them, but why don’t you and report back? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/ BL

i did not know about PubMed. I took a look at the various articles, read what abstracts i could, and there is some evidence acupuncture has some effect in lowering blood glucose levels, as well as helping with diabetic related problems. my general impression is that they’re still trying to suss out the differences between Type I, Type II – acupuncture (and different points) have different effects. doug
