Dilute Urine,Vet HELP

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

Is she drinking excessive amounts of water as well?  If so you may need to check for elevated blood sugar levels indicating the possibility of diabetes. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have a 10 year old Rottweiler female(spayed) she has dilute urine and we cant seem to find out why. She has been tested for Chushings with both urine and blood tests that came back negative. Her kidneys and liver are fine when tested. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should be looking for? We have alot of tests to do so I would like to minimize the amount of testing to find out the cause. <<  Your vet, if s/he hasn’t tested  for it already can do so easily.  Just deprive water from the dog for a  time and see if it begins to concentrate.  I’d not do it at home without  vet advice though, because severe dehydration and subsequent hypovolemic  shock can result.   Thank you for responding. My vet talked to me by phone the other night and suggested doing that after another urine test(sterile). I am willing to spend the money on any and all tests but I just thought I would narrow the field down. Thank You again.    There are several other diseases which can cause problems besides liver and kidney problems.  Is she drinking a lot of water?  She’d have to be to have dilute urine…  Some dogs have what’s called primary or psychogenic polydipsia which is where there’s something wrong in the brain sothe dog just drinks and drinks.  As far as *I* know, this usually doesn’t cause many problems but isn’t often on most vet’s rule-out list.  Diabetes insipidus can also cause a failure of concentration.  Diagnosing that requires a water deprivation test which is quite easy.  Maybe talk to another vet about this or find an internal medicine specialist.
