diabetes as a genetic disorder
Question:
I’ve read how diabetes can be the result of a virus, but I also know that it can also be hereditary. My question is what genetic disorder causes it, and which gene or chromosome (though I doubt its sex-linked) is affected?
It’s probably not as simple as "which gene?" Correlations have been demonstrated between a number of gene formations and the predisposition to diabetes (mostly in the case of Type 2, if I recall correctly), and there are reasons to suspect a lot more may exist. So, the "diabetes gene" may actually turn out to be one of a large number of combinations, which may increase your risk of DM in lots of different ways. The research jury is very much "still out" on that one… Notice, by the way, that I say "risk". You may carry all the "diabetic genes" and still go through life without becoming diabetic. — regards, Ianp http://www.darktower.com/ "Optical mice have no balls."
