Brittle Diabetic
Question:
Errm, I’ve been on Isulatard for a while (3 years), & yet I find it very hard to be ‘predicatable’ on light fasting dosages though I’ve taken ‘em for years b4 sleep. I’ve been through all the actrapid/humalog things yet have Very Hypo moments somewhere between 04:00 & 08:00 & no matter what I eat appropriate afterwards the insulin. I’m personally down to the Insulatard as the only problem. Do any of you think that’s appropriate? 24hr, a smidgen slower. (So how come Hypo’s are/can be quite insightful?) NTL any ideas of what else is available for slowish insulin response types? (But NOT immune). mike.

If she uses a long acting insulin like Insulatard or Humulin I then it’s a swap for those. However she would still need a fast acting one like Humalog or Actrapid to cover mealtimes. Lantus supposedly works much better in the long acting department and might help her stabilise a little. It has a very shallow peak and a longer activity profile. i started out on the beef/pork insulin 911 lunch breaks for a number of years before i gave up on "human NPH" Ultra Lente human insulin…… what a world of difference! ! ! i no longer have 911 hypo’s, my bg stay within a reasonable range, and i’m no longer considered "brittle diabetic" i believe that "brittle diabetic" is the Dr’s out for not trying something new that may be better ! if she switches to the new Glargine, that will be one shot by itself, and Glargine(Lantus) into range, and then it’s only the meal shots that need to bg ranges…. they feel SO much better good luck! that’s BS too
