alternatives to beta blockers?

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

Hi folks.  My recent abandonment of Inderal has not been a great success.  I hoped Klonopin would hold the fort by itself but my racing pulse is as bad as it ever was without Inderal. I am loathe to go back on a beta blocker though.  The don’t even prescribe them in the UK anymore because they cause diabetes so often.  I don’t want to be on one long term – I’m already at some risk since my mom is diabetic :-(   Also, I’m pretty sure the Inderal was worsening my depression. I heard something about calcium-channel blockers.  Does anyone know if these would be suitable for a racing pulse caused by anxiety?  Or is there another alternative to beta blockers? many thanks, — _TJ_ <TJ_IREL at YAHOO dot IE — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Dear TJ, I knew CCBs treated hypertension but didn’t know they can also slow one’s heart rate. I just read that :) I don’t know how well it works for anxiety so I can’t advise you. It can’t hurt to talk to your doctor about this. Please don’t think I am minimizing your question or discomfort, but have you ever tried deep breathing and muscle relaxation exercises? When used consistently and properly, they can really help to lower your heart rate. Good luck, TJ! Calcium channel blockers are good alternatives. So are ACE-inhibitors. Philip (on a betablocker *and* a Calcium channel blocker…) — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

It slows down conduction in the AV node. My father was on it for atrial fibrillation, to keep his ventricular rate normal. I’ve never heard of CCBs being used to treat the sinus tachycardia caused by anxiety.  Does anyone know if these would be suitable for a racing pulse caused by anxiety?

I’ve never read about anxiety-induced rapid heart rate being treated by anything other than beta blockers. Clonidine acts centrally (in the brain) to decrease sympathetic discharge. Don’t know if it could be used for sinus tachycardia. Chip — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm
