ace inhibitors to treat microalbuminuria

Categories: Diabetes

Question:

I just started seeing a diabetes specialist. He told me  Ihad a high protein      count in my urine, and wants to start me on vasote c, an ace inhibitor. It    seems that recent research indicates these hypotensive drugs for the treatment    and    prevention of f    urt   her renal problems. I am not pleased with the PDR’s list  of  side    effects, nor with the scanty data I am finding about ace inhibitors and      diabetes. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks. Also, sorry if the note    has skipped lines; I don’t k    now how to prevent that yet. The PDR often badly over-states the likelihood of problems, or likely severity. I’ve been taking HCTZ and Lisinopril for years now, with only mild and not dangerous side effects, for example. Vasotec is very, very commonly used for high blood pressure.                                 Nico Garcia

Response:

I’ve been on vasotec for almost six months and am pleased to report that my protein numbers are significantly lower than they had been in June. Vasotec’s effect is very similar to Capoten, a new drug to combat the same problem. I also read the PDR, and the side effects were not alarming to me, pending that I am not taking it if I’m pregnant.  The pregnancy issue seems to be the only really serious effect (Capoten carries the same warning), and my MD told me that if necessary, I could stop taking it for the required 9 months and start back up on it.   Having seen the benefits of Vasotec, I would be hard-pressed to give it up.   Also, while this is a drug for blood pressure, I do not have any such problem.  I was concerned that it would affect my pressure, but there has been no change.
