Why the Cravings?

Question:

How long do you figure before you give up and go back to your old ways of eating everything and anything, porky? — JC Eat less, exercise more. —

Outside the paradigm of crave/not crave it’s all about choice. You either choose to be fat or to follow the path of success. — JC Eat less, exercise more. — So I am done with induction and this week was my OWL week. I was fine on induction, but now after 4 days on OWL I have cravings for food when i really shouldn’t have any. It is more the thought of eating them, not the need of humger. Anyone else go through this? I am compensating by drinking water or decaf tea.

Response:

I added more veggies and what not. Had celery with natural peanut butter, which could have been a trigger I guess.

Peanut butter would have done it for me. Maybe try cream cheese on celery next time?

Yes. But frankly, I am not sure how did I managed to get over. I guess I simply was hungry :) I think that this phase lasted two weeks or so. Then I forgot the whole problem. Also, eating some almonds here and there helps. My veggies and olive oil gone up since those times too. Mirek

That’s a good philosophy JC, but I’m worried about cravings starting up, as well. I don’t think I can white-knuckle my way through life. I still love Twix. I just don’t eat them very often. I suppose it’s a matter of how badly you want to achieve your goals. Just like in school, you might hate algebra, but if you really want to get a college degree you’re going to have to suck it up and drive on. Btw, that’s one of the reasons I hang around this newsgroup. I like to know I’m not the only one with cravings and hunger. It helps me in some small way. — JC Eat less, exercise more. —

Choice shmoice. Human choice in controlling calorie intake is a delusion.  Hunger can easily overwhelm an intellectually based plan for meals. The OP has discovered that increasing his carbs has increased his hunger. For many this is the key to how low carb succeeds. I would say he should return to the lower carb levels and take some vitamins. Response:

Mike, Something you ate probably raised your blood sugar higher than you have gotten used to, which caused an insulin release that brought it lower than you are used to. This causes hunger. However, if you eat at this level for a week or two, you’ll often adjust and adapt.  I don’t get hunger cravings now at the 60 gram a day level unless I eat 1) sugar alcohols or 2) something with a lot of garlic. I’m not sure why the garlic does this, but I can get out of control with a teaspoon or two of garlic hummus very easily.  Weird. — Jenny  - Low Carbing for 4 years. At goal for weight. Thing is I am only at 25 carbs max. Don’t really want to spend the rest of my life in Ketosis.

Have a carrot.  Or some LC French toast.  Or some LC Carb Countdown Chocolate Dairy Beverage.  Maybe they would help with your cravings and hunger, JC.  Sorry.  I just can’t help myself. — Jean B.

Twix is not low carb.

According to some forms of herbal medicine (I think  maybe Ayurveda, but I don’t remember for sure)garlic is an appetite enhancer. It sure works that way for me — makes almost anything tast better:)Robyn

Response:

I do not crave anything I no longer eat. I used to love pringles and do not care for them even one bit anymore. I think that they are shit and not food. So are twix.

I truly marvel at you when you say stuff like this, ig.  I wish we could convince you that your experience is far from universal. I don’t think the things I used to eat will ever lose their appeal for me. I can convince myself that it’s worth it to avoid them, and I’m doing my best to stay focused in that respect; but the distaste you describe is completely alien to me.  I just don’t think I’ll ever feel that way. Having said that, controlling my appetite definitely takes effort.

That’s a relief – you *are* human, after all.  :-) For example, out grocery store sells "rotisserie lamb", which I would eat a lot more of if I let myself do it.

That sounds delicious.  One of my staples since low-carb is the lamb shish kebab platter from my local Lebanese place – "no rice, extra salad."  I get it about once a week, and it makes two meals.  Yum. carla

I don’t think that’s the answer.  For me to get rid of cravings it means to be abstinent from sweet stuff.  Artifical or real.

Peanut butter is a no no for me….big time trigger.  Have some SF jello with a dollop of real whipped cream instead.  That seems to do me right.  But not every night!  Make it once every 3 or 4 nghts, use it as a reward.

You really don’t believe that you have a choice? You can either shut your pie-hole and push away from the table, or you can shovel a bunch of crap into your gaping maw. It is in the end, your choice. — JC Eat less, exercise more. —
