Question:
Weighed myself this morning on my Tanita, went straight to the doctor’s office (beam-type scale) and weighed in… Told the nurse what it should be, and low & behold, I was EXACTLY right… Brian
Hi Brian (and everybody else who reads this), It’s good to know that these scales are accurate. I got a Tanita for Christmas and had to "adjust" my weight (starting and current) back up seven lbs. Arghh. A bummer, but I knew that was going to happen because my old scale was off. At least I won’t have to worry too much about accuracy now. I did get a bit perturbed when my body fat measured in at 43% and hubby, who has about 50 lbs to lose himself, measured in at 23%. Of course he is a lot taller than me. I’m a shrimp. (5′2") And I have about 30 more pounds to lose than him. Sigh. The good news is he is so excited about my progress that he started seriously LCing on New Year’s Day. Knowing him, he will probably drop his lbs. a lot faster than me. Sigh. Terry Atkins since 11/10/99 218/197.5/120

Hi Brian; That’s good news. I bought a Tanita,1631 at $30 myself. Got home, weighed myself and was shocked to find I was 7 pounds heavier than on my old scales.I Had just finished induction and thought I had lost at least seven lbs. Then I realized that I always weighed more at my doc’s scales too.Felt bad for awhile but now I quess we are registering our "real"weight. Sad to say, but true. Happy Holidays, Glo

We just bought a HEALTHOMETER $40 one at Walmart. Great scale! Tap with fot to get 888 to light up, then stand on it & see flashing 000 then your weight appears. You can even pick it up to read close, if you didn’t get your contact in like me. 10 year warranty too. Old scale stated 130, then new one 145 (shocker) & I did go to Giachetti’s gym & weight there & 145. So it is very accurate. Has anyone found the perfect (preferably digital) scale? Ours is TERRIBLE Thanx in advance — Jim and Jean Friedland

Try http://www.healthchecksystems.com/ I bought my Tanita BWB-800 physician’s scale from them a month or so ago and was very pleased with their service. They seem to have a wide variety of scales and body fat monitors. It looks like they have two different Tanita scale/body fat analyzers for 59.99 and regular Tanita digital scales starting at 32.95. About my scale: It was expensive ($350 – I had to have something that weighed over 330+ and wanted a Tanita), but I couldn’t be happier with it. It has a 460 lb capacity and weighs in .2 lb increments. Like someone said earlier on this thread, no matter how I stand on the thing it gives me a consistent reading. It’s extremely sturdy, and its accuracy was dead on when I tested it using various weights. One warning though: Seems like quite a few people have gotten some nasty surprises the first time they weighed on "Tanita the torturer" – I recall at least one person here mentioning they’d been 20 lbs heavier than on their old scale. Frightening, but hey… don’t we deserve to know the truth no matter how much it hurts?
) I shouldn’t talk, because I was one of the lucky ones – I wound up being 4 lbs *lighter* on my Tanita than on the old scale I was using. A really crappy analog scale from 10 years ago. If I lean forward, I lose 6 pounds, backward I gain 10. I’d just like a scale where no matter how I shift my weight, I weigh the same!

You’ll pay for them, but I (and a lot of other people on this news grouop) have got Tanita scales… The particular model I’ve got measures weight to the nearest .2 lbs If I get on it, weight myself at 195.2 lbs, get of in a little different position, it will either read 195.2 195.0 or 195.4 lbs EVERY time. (not to mention they also measure body-fat percentage, but that’s an entirely different matter) For the cheapest Tanita, expect to pay around $39 (measuere weight to nearest .5 lbs if I remember correctly) Brian says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – A really crappy analog scale from 10 years ago. I had a crappy scale like that. It weighed me differently depending on where it was sitting in the bathroom. I asked for a new one for Christmas a few years ago and got a digital. Gee, my cat that weighs 13 pounds at the vet weighed -8 pounds on that scale. I weighed myself and then picked him up and weighed again, MINUS 8 pounds. I weigh myself at work (hospital) now. The Tanitas are the best in my book. I have one that measures to the nearest .5 and the damn thing will never give me the benefit of losing .5 by the usual lean forward, backward, sideways, turn-the-scale around methods. Can you recommend some good and reliable scales? I saw a Tanita 2000 at the store but for $80. I thought it maybe too much . Let me hear from you. Glo

My husband bought me a scale last Christmas and it’s called *thinner*. Very accurate, you don’t change the settings, lifetime battery, digital with a good readout. Jump on it and weigh, you can get on it again and it’s very consistent. It is like an acrylic glass and has weights on the four corners. I love mine and wouldn’t part with it for the world. It did cost $60 though, but well worth the cost. It was found at Frys in S, Cal, But I am sure other stores carry it. — Karen 215.5/201.5/150……Atkins loss – 14 lbs Total combined loss 61 lbs started 10/18/99 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can you recommend some good and reliable scales? My husband and I finally bit the bullet and spent $145 on a Brookstone scale digital scale with HUGE numbers. (No claiming that you can’t make out the numbers on this one while standing on it!) It is dead accurate every time. I have tested it against the "Reality" scale at the gym (you know, those brutal ones where you have to set the weights and watch the pendulum swing) and it is always within a 1/2 pound. It measures to the 1/2 pound. The whole question of moving on it, or leaning one way or another is removed because if you move a hair it returns a reading of ERR and you have to get off and get on again. I have gotten on it 3-4 times in a row and it always returns the exact same weight. I highly recommend it. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

I don’t know about this brand, but some scales have a "memory" so that if you get on and off again quickly, within a couple minutes, it will return the exact same weight it has in its memory if it senses an almost identical weight, in order to demonstrate a sense of "accuracy". The only way to really be sure is to alternate weighings with someone who has a considerably different weight from yours (hubby maybe?). This would force the "memory" to reset, and you could more validly check accuracy. — Debbie Cusick "When I get a little money I buy books: and if any is left over I buy food and clothes. Usually, twice a week, but if, after weighing myself, I feel I am close to shedding another pound I will weigh myself again that next day. Cathy

Ditto (except the naked part)….don’t want to scar the neighbors kids for life. Sometimes I’ll jump on at night just before bed to prepare myself for the morning….I can pretty consistantly count on 1.5 pounds overnight. Never.
Well, almost never. If you do decide to weigh every day, be prepared to be disappointed from time to time. Your weight fluctuates naturally from day to day and sometimes you will gain, sometimes you will lose, especially after the initial water loss. Maybe half a dozen or more times a day. It helps keep me honest. The main weight in is first thing in the morning after a pee break and just before I hit my treadmill — this is my day to day reference weigh-in. The scale is just at the door to my ‘playroom’ – computer/ham radio/treadmill/workshop etc so I pass it often, but frequently pause for a weigh-in. — Diagnosed Type II Diabetes March 5 2001 Beating it with diet and exercise! 297/215/210 (to be revised lower) 58"/43"(!)/44" (already lower too!)
