Question:

1.  Glucometers.  I have been using Accu Check Instant.  I have been reading in magazines that the newer meters use a smaller amount of blood.

I am very pleased with the Accuchek Advantage, now that I am using the new Comfort Curve strips.  The new strips take MUCH less blood than the previous strips did, and my fingers don’t get sore at all anymore. Note:  The Accuchek Complete uses the same strips.  It is a more expensive meter, but it has more features, as well. I’ve tried other meters, but I’ve used the Accuchek line for years, and I like it the best of those I’ve tried. Bev Remove the "SpamFree" for email, please.

! I am asking for recommendations in two areas. 1.  Glucometers.  I have been using Accu Check Instant.  I have been reading in magazines that the newer meters use a smaller amount of blood.  That would be nice, but there are so many glucometers out there.  Advise would be appreciated. 2.  Out of all the books on diabetes out there, which have educated you the most.  I am either confused by medical jargon or not satisfied with the amount of information given. Pat

Pat, 1. Of the meters I’ve tried, the best (and the one I use) is the Glucometer Elite XL. Of the rest the one that tempts me to change is the Fastake. 2. As someone else mentioned, Dr. Bernstein’s book is good. I would also recommend The Diabetic’s Book (All your questions answered) by Biermann and Toohey. It’s excellent. For an overview of diabetes, I am satified with the ADA’s Complete Guide to Diabetes. I have only used the original Accu-Check and the One Touch Basic myself. I have the used the One Touch Basis since 1995 and am satified with that. Cmat

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes about three years ago.  I am sorry to say I have been in denial for most of that time :-(  I am on oral medication, Glucotrol XL and have just switched from Glucophage to Avandia. What I’ve learned has mostly been here or WebMD and other diabetes websites. Also, our hospital has Diabetes support group and now a coalition which has really been helpful.  Yesterday, our support group had the leader of the coalition there, a certified dietician (I think was her title) plus my own dietician and we could sit there and ask them anything we wanted.  It was very very helpful. On the second question, I was given an Accu-Chek Complete when I was first diagnosed a year and half ago almost…Since the advent of the Comfort Curve strips…everything is great.  It is a little bigger, you can put in a lot of info if you wish which your doc can download.  Mine never has…but then he doesn’t do alot of stuff.  :o(  Hope this helps…   Oh also…you can get free meters often cause they want you to use their strips cause that’s what costs so much.  I always buy 100 strips cause it’s much cheaper than just buying 50.  Someone at our meeting said it was even cheaper buying them at Costco, but they couldn’t remember how much they were! — Sue on the Oregon Coast (Type II) People are like tea bags-you have to put them in hot water  before you know how strong they are.
