question about cure
Question:
I had someone tell me today that there is a blood test that can be given to children of diabetic parents, to deteremine if the child has the gene that will cause him to have diabetes later. Also if the child does have the gene they can do sometiing to keep him from getting diabetes. Does anyone know anything about this?
You don’t specify if you are talking about type 1 or type 2 diabetes, both of which have very complex genetics which are nowhere near fully understood. There are some specific known genetic patterns which impart a very high probability of eventual diabetes. The problem is that those patterns account for only a few percent of diabetes. The vast majority of diabetics don’t show those patterns. In addition, the answer is not completely contained in the genes. Not all identical twins both have diabetes even though their genes are identical. There are a number of studies trying to identify ways to delay or avoid diabetes in high risk individuals. They are a long way from anything that could be applied to patients. — Charly Coughran

The test you are talking about (in Palo Alto, Ca. area) was given at the Stanford University Hospital. I do not know of any home kit for this test. You may want to check with your doctor or a nearby hospital. I know the test has been given at other hospitals in the USA, but I do not know the exact locations.

The "gene" (or genes) for Type 1 diabetes aren’t known as yet. But there are certain blood "groups" called HLA types, that are more susceptible to Type 1 diabetes. You may be thinking of the GAD antibody test, that show whether Type 1 is in the process of developing, and can predict the clinical onset up to 10 years away. Have a look at http://www.biosyn.se/prosp_eng/diagaden.html Ignore the fact that it’s a commercial site floating its shares – the science is spot on. Also http://www.diabetes.org/DiabetesCare/1995-12/1557.htm has some info on GAD. Also if the child does have the gene they can do sometiing to keep him
