Elite glucometer

Question:

I am a type 2 newbie whose insurance will completely cover… <snip   Anybody out there have any experience with the Elite???   <snip   The supplier said its one of the more accurate ones.  <snip They are all approximately the same accuracy. Considering that you can range from 70-150 mg/dL (the normal range for most non-diabetics), it doesn’t matter if the meter is a couple mg/dL off. The big advantage of the Elite is that it uses a very tiny amount of blood compared to most meters. There are only a couple others that come close to it in that respect. It is also lightweight and easy to carry. The only drawback is that the test strips are among the most expensive of all the brands. Actually, this is only "half" true…. e.g. Gem (mail order that advertises in back of Diabetes Forecast, 1-800-793-1995) sells them as follows: Current "normal" price/100 = $65.94  (buy 2 50’s) So why not get the "cheaper" 100’s ??? You have Gem send you a form (simple/crude form, done by Gem) and you fill out a couple of lines (your name, # of tests per day, etc.) and then you get your Doctor to sign it and have his office either fax or mail it back to Gem. This then gets you the following pricing on the 50 packs of strips: 1 or 2  = 28.44 / 50-pack 3-5     = 27.99 /  " 6-11    = 27.44 /  " 12/12+  = 26.99 /  "                 …..OTOH, I used to use the One Touch, and would get an "insufficient blood" warning from it about one test out of twenty. This meant the strip was wasted and I had to do the test over. With the Elite I have practically never wasted a strip. When I factor that into the cost of the strips, the strips for the Elite aren’t significantly more expensive. One more thing about the Elite: It measures whole blood, of course, but Bayer has fiddled with the electronics to make it imitate the readings your doc gets from plasma. Plasma readings are 10-12% higher than whole blood readings. In other words, the normal range for most meters is 70-150 mg/dL, but if using the Elite, your normal range should be about 80-165 mg/dL. Cheers,  Bill

the product in question is GLUCOMETER ELITE,  its great!! Let me tell you it uses less blood to test and therefore my fingers dont bruise and become calloused from the lancing.  I am very proud to say I have used this meter for about 4 months .. have used accuchek for 3-4 years and an old one touch for 3 yrs.. this is by far best product.. made by a company called BAYER ( like the aspirin!) Good Luck! D. J. It doesnt matter if you win the rat race, you will still be a rat!! Time is an unrewable resource, endeavor to live so that you may never regret something you did NOT do.

Hi all, I have a accu check easy…my insurance only allows me to get either accu check easy or advanced. But really it seems to be doing okay.  I can’t complain it did not cost me anything.

Jenny, I have been reading that myself, but I think they miss one important thing in their reviews, that is accuracy/consistency. Maybe comparison to lab results should be included to make the reviews complete. Ok, if a meter has tons of features, even an idiot can use it, dirt cheap, lightening fast, but if it is not accurate/consistent, it should still belong to the garbage bin :) Best Regards, Eric Ho

The Bayer Glucometer Elite.  I have 2 of them and keep one in my desk at work.  Since your doctor recommended it I’m sure he knows how it reads, but you need to be aware that it is calibrated to simulate plasma readings instead of whole blood readings.  This is done to make the meter readings have a closer correlation to lab readings.  That said, it is generally recognized that the Glucometer Elite is one of the most consistent meters on the market. — BigAl

The name of the company is Bayer Corporation. In my opinion its one of the best , if not the best glucometer for accuracy.  I have all the brands of glucometers and once did a test to measure the reliablity of the glucometers. Time and time again, the Elite was far more reliable than any of the others that I tested  I got about the same value each test (was done right after the other).  The others had variances of 10, 20 even 30 points difference.
