Chromium Picolinate for Diabetics

Categories: Diabetes Type

Question:

I went to the store tonight and bought flax seed oil and calcium/magnesium.  I was also looking at chromium picolinate, however on the bottle it warns diabetics to consult with a physician before use, so I left it on the shelf (for now).      My question is this…what do any of you know about this supplement and the effects it could/does have on a diabetic?  Any links or info you have would be most useful and appreciated.  I will also consult with my Dr.  TIA- Stacey

Chromium is essential for the metabolism of sugar. Supplements have the tendency to reduce insulin resistance over time — hence the warning. If you are taking diabetic drugs or insulin, chromium supplements may reduce or eliminate your need for the drugs and such drug usage should be monitored for possible modification.

Response:

The supplement pushers would have you believe that chromium picolinate will lower blood sugar, hence the warning. However, this won’t happen unless you are chromium deficient, which most diabetics in the developed world are not. Recent studies have suggested that chromium picolinate might damage DNA. . .

Response:

A good multi should have 200 micrograms of chromium  and that amount is sufficient unless you have a chromium deficiency.   If in doubt have a blood test to determine if more is needed until then keep your money in yer pocket.        Calcium and magnesium powder can be purchased in bulk and lasts a long long time for very little money.  I sell it so I won’t give you any links Lee Rodgers     I went to the store tonight and bought flax seed oil and calcium/magnesium. TIA- Stacey

I am not a diabetic but am pretty sure that I have insulin resistance problem and that I might end up with type 2 diabetes if I am not careful.  I have been taking GTF chromium because I read that it helps lower triglycerides and mine are way too high.  Wondered if chromium picolinate would work for that, too and if there is any reason to think one is better than the other for that problem? Chromium picolinate is on sale at health food store this week. Dorothy
