A study I'd like to see

Categories: Diabetes Type

Question:

Three groups of animals who self-limit their food intake, and don’t tend to get fat when food is unlimited Group One:  Unlimited supply of food pellets, water to drink Group Two: Unlimited supply of food pellets, high fructose corn-syrup sweetened drink Group Three: Unlimited supply of food pellets, both water and sweet drink I wonder if groups 2 and 3 would get fat.  I wonder if they’d eat more food than the first group, and I wonder if group 3 would choose the sweet drink over water. — Michelle Levin http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

If rats have an unlimited food supply, do they self-limit?  I used to have hamsters, and they would bury extra food if we gave them too much, so maybe I could do this with hamsters.  Although I anticipate the end result would be that all three groups would get eaten by my cat. — Michelle Levin http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

My dog self-limits if all he has is his dry dog food. But I don’t think he would self-limit on snacks, like jerkies. doug

My cat Yoda doesn’t self-limit.  I have to measure out his food; he’ll eat until he vomits without fail if I give him more food than he needs! http://users.thelink.net/marengo/YodaPix/Yoda_being_stupid — Peter 270/219/180 website:  http://users.thelink.net/marengo

It’s worth mentioning that rodent pancreases and other parts of their glucose metabolism behave slightly differently than human ones in ways that would make the results of this particular rat study not entirely applicable to humans. The only study that would really tell us what we want to know here is one done on humans.  Don’t hold your breath . . . . — –Jenny  Type 2 diabetes since 1998.
