Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – First off I do not claim to be a fitness guru, but I have learned  a few things over the past couple of years.  You are correct about not seeing the scale dip.  Muscle weighs more than fat. Muscle weighs exactly the same as fat, which weighs exactly the same as lead.  Its like the old joke, "What weighs more : a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers?" Now, muscle IS more dense than fat, thus pound for pound takes up less space. here we go again…cue up the "you know what i meant!" posts. But I don’t know what they meant.  And since exercise myths run rampant I felt the need to make the correction to, hopefully, enlighten anyone that doesn’t already know better.  :-) When you hear a statement of the form "Muscle weighs more than fat," it doesn’t make sense to assume the person who said it is an idiot. In fact, it is downright impolite to make that assumption.

I never made that assumption.  I assumed they were misinformed. So I assume you are trying to be an asshole. And you are succeeding.

You will not be getting any Christmas presents from me! When someone says "Muscle weighs more than fat," equal volumes are

implied. So where is this Bible of statement impications? The statement doesn’t make sense any other way.

This is why I was correcting it. To say that a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat is trivially true. A pound of anything weighs the same as a pound of anything else, so you *are* just tryuing to be an asshole.

Fuck you very much. Muscle does weigh more than fat. Everybody but you knew that. Now you know it.

Martin, you fucking idiot, MUSCLE DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN FAT! dave h

Response:

So does that mean you are less dense if you are a fat head rather than a muscle brain?

nah .. just means they are airheads :D — Kitty =^..^= 168/159/130 – November Goal 155 17 September 03

Response:

Thank you for the correction!  This does make more sence that muscle is more dense.  And by the way…"You know what I meant!"

Any thoughts about whether or not I should buy a scale? $$ Why not? You can get them for under $20 at Wal-Mart. Hey! I’ll hang my post here on the post Jack Cassidy sent: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – No don’t send me to the FAQ’s. I was reading about how when you start burning fat and gaining muscle, the scales do not start to dip down for a long time. My thoughts are that it would be discouraging for me to have a scale and not see it move. I was thinking that a tape measure might be a better way of seeing improvement in my body, especially if I exercise. Any thoughts about whether or not I should buy a scale? Patty P.S. The last time I was at the doc’s I weighed 210  I don’t own a scale, and don’t intend to buy one. I have to go to the Doctor on a fairly regular basis and I weigh myself then. Some of the supermarkets here in Florida have scales in the front but they only go to 300 pounds, so it took me a while before I could weigh myself there. The reason I don’t want a scale at home is because I would weigh myself every day and probably become discouraged very quickly. This way every time I weigh myself there is a pretty good loss from the time before. I went to my Pulmonary Doctor today and the nurse said, "Wow, you lost another 20 pounds since the last time you were here."  :c) For me it is better if I don’t weigh myself too often. I check my weight once a week at the dialysis center my mom goes to. Nice professional digital scale built into the floor. I don’t even have any type (or size) of scale in the house. I’m thinking of buying a food scale though. — Stephen S. 331/304/220 <- as of 12 Nov. 03 LC since 28 Sept. 03 http://dragonfen.com/diet

i like to measure and weigh.  knowing that i’m smaller even if i’ve gained scale weight has helped me to realize that scale weight doesn’t really mean very much.  it’s just a number – and it changes all the time.

Do both, measure and weigh.  When I started working out, I lost no pounds or inches my first month, and then I started low-carb the next month and started losing both pounds and inches.  It’s interesting how sometimes I’ll have measurement stalls, like my arms or legs won’t go down for a few months even though the rest of me is shrinking, and then whoosh! they’ll catch up. — -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna

First off I do not claim to be a fitness guru, but I have learned  a few things over the past couple of years.  You are correct about not seeing the scale dip.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  A tape measure would be a more effective way to measure the change in your body.  Although, I like to use a scale as well.  I weigh myself every morning, but only pay attention to the every week weigh ins.  I compare each days weight to the corresponding day of the past week. When you train with weights (free weights or machine weights) you will, of course, gain muscle mass.  Your body requires more energy to keep up that new muscle mass, and will burn more calories/fat to keep it up.  The more muscle you have the more your metabolism will rise.  Hence, you will burn more fat around the clock. For me I would love to see the scale dip way down.  But the true test is to see the tape get shorter or longer depending on where I am taping myself at the time.  If my chest gets bigger and I loose my gut, who cares how much I weigh!  You might be over the acceptable weight for your height, but your body fat % will be in the correct range!!!  That may only apply to body builders though. I sure hope this helped you out.

Not always so.  I noticed immediately.  You will also notice the weightloss before the tape will.
