Question:

Hi, I am male and am 6 feet one inch.  I weigh 14 stone but was nearly 16 stone some time ago.  I think I should be 13 stone.  I have Diabetes am I still at risk with my Diabetes?  Thanks.

HI Paul… That sounds like a question for your doctor.  14 stone (196 pounds for the yanks) sounds pretty good for 6 foot 1 inch, my boyfriend is 191 and looks great at 5′ 11"… but that’s not a medical issue. All charts that I can find say between 165 and 190 so you don’t sound that far off.  Frankly, without looking at you, I can’t tell what you SHOULD be. You could be quite muscular, and be 225# and very healthy (have friends that look like body builders but have an "unhealthy" BMI) (BMI’s are stupid btw, imo).  If you looked thin everywhere else, but had a large belly, then you’d have more to go.  Guess it depends on the body type. What sort of diabetes – type 1 (insulin defendant) or type 2 (usually controlled by diet and oral drugs)?  And what kind of risk are you asking about? If you eat properly, lose the excess weight, and take sufficient exercise, and are a type 2 diabetic, you may find the raised blood sugar levels lessen, but you will always need to be careful, and may need to stick to a diet that is lighter on foods with a higher glycemic index than the average unaffected person.  If you are type 1, the only known and effective cure is a cell transplant: unless you come to Kent and emulate one of our local diabetics (the only one for whom this has so far effected a cure), you will always be diabetic, like my husband, and will always need to control it with insulin. The WW eating plan is an excellent one to follow if you are diabetic: type 2’s may need to jigger it in a lower carb direction, and this will need to be done carefully.  Every person responds slightly differently, and it’s a matter of experimenting to see what works for you.  With type   1, it may be necessary to alter the insulin dose slightly to take account of the lower volumes of food being consumed, along with raised exercise levels: DH, frequently adjusts his doses to cope with what we eat, when we eat, and his exercise regime.  Yesterday was a good example of this: lunchtime dose was lower than average to take account of the 7 mile walk he and our son did round Ightham Mote yesterday afternoon, and was calculated carefully to take in a late dinner with a very healthy main course, and a dessert of Tarte au Citron and ice cream.
