Question:

think it would behoove the medical field to make home testing for PSA levels available so we could all test much more frequently than once every year or six months?

I ran a google search on the terms "PSA home test", and from reading a few hits, it  appears that these are available from various vendors for about $39.00 per test. Some require a prescription. (NY patients) Has anyone in this group used one of these tests? Response:

I bought a home PSA test at a drug store for $29 and my daughter, who is a nurse, stuck my finger and put the blood sample in the little devise and it indicated that my PSA was nil. I knew I was to have a PSA test at the clinic the following week and that test said I was 44. I mentioned this to my urologist and he looked at me like I would be a good man to sell a used car to. Thanks to all of you for the input and advice.  All of it was very informative.  My blood sugars ran very high for eighteen years and I have lost most of my vision. I am paying the price for my indulgences unlike you men who got this through no fault of your own.  I wish all of you well through your struggle.  At least since I have been lurking here for a few months now I am well informed on certain options in case I get this.  Do you think it would behoove the medical field to make home testing for PSA levels available so we could all test much more frequently than once every year or six months? Hey Bill; Just thought I’d pass this along for what it’s worth. I also have diabetes – type 2 and pretty much under control just by diet. There is alot of good information on diabetes located at Alt.Support.Diabetes.UK I realize that this is a Brittish site, but those who post there are very knowledgeable, helpful and there is just enough of the Brit humor(humour) to make it interesting. I never got much out the diabetes site here in the US, but the blokes across the pond were quite helpful when I was first DX. As far as home testing of PSA goes, I’m not sure how the lab end of that would work out without a Dr being involved somehow, but it might be worth looking into. Take care and g’luck M8  (:) Age – 68 8/12/02 – PSA 3.7 10/13/03 – PSA 4.69 11/11/03 – PSA 4.8 11/18/03 – Biopsy – 10 cores one core-25% of core-Gleason 4+4=8 all other cores benign tissue 12/10/03 – Consult – Oncologist 12/16/03 – Consult – Radiation Oncologist Treatment Plan – HT – started 12/17/03 – Eulixen & Lupron 2/10/04 – Started – Flowmax and Megastrol Radiation – IMRT to begin 3/14/04 – for 5 weeks Theraseed implant after Radiation completed
