Pilots and aspartame, I want info please!

Categories: Diabetes Type 2

Question:

I am a Commercial Pilot with type II – no problems with Aspartame. I think she is nuts! My endo, flight surgeon and other specialists have said I could use it if I wanted to. No restrictions. I use it all the time with everything and have been for years.

Response:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Received some information from several people concerning aspartame (Nutrasweet tm) and links to vision problems for pilots. I am a student pilot with diabetes type II (diet and exercise control alone!), I drink diet Coke and after hearing this one, gave the soda can several long looks! I would like some feedback or general information on this issue, so if you have some, please forward it on over.  Just so happens that I have my 6 month appt with my MD and would like to show him this stuff and get his 2 cents worth.

If your doctor doesen’t roll on the floor laughing at this one, you’re lucky!  One person – an ultrafoolish, crusading liar – on this newsgroup has posted claims that the FCC has issued warnings against consumption of any product with Nutrasweet (aspertame) in it, to out right bans against its consumption by commercial pilots. As one of my closest friends is an airline pilot, I asked him.  He roared with laughter, and said that if aspertame were a hazard, then we’re in _big_ trouble – diet sodas are consumed by mega-cases by airline pilots! As a student pilot myself, I’ve never seen any documentation of any ill effects caused by Nutrasweet myself, but I have seen the fallacious posts of one Madame Betty Noel, also known as "Mad Betty Martini" right here on this newsgroup that pretends to show that it is dangerous.   So – enjoy all the diet pop y’want – I do, and so do countless millions of others – with no ill effects.  My diet pop is also of the decaffienated variety – caffiene _does_ make me too herky-jerky! Do not worry about Aspartame-is-evil type posts. Unfortunately this forum, like – get rich quick schemes and other scam artist – snake-oil peddlers and other "miracle" curists – nude-girls-extravaganza sleaze pushers – the-end-is-near, etc. garden variety loonies "on a mission" – etc. Since Internet is new to many people newcomers tend to think that posts here are honest and important. There are all sorts of fabricated "reports" and "studies" conducted  by "doctors". Like many times before these important sounding events and names have been shown to be without merit and more often non-existent. As always discuss medical conditions and treatment with your doctor.
