My friend Jerry

Categories: Diabetes Type 2

Question:

Yup. It’s related to the fact that, due to obesity, for the first time in modern history, our kids’ life span will be less than ours. The "cure"? Get them off their butts, into sports, and out of McDonald’s. Turns my stomach when my buds feed their kids crap; there’s no excuse for it. There’s no way to sugarcoat it: may as well encourage the vulerable little suckers to smoke. Easy to treat? Not without education, motivation, willpower, discipline, and tough love. I.P.

Also get them off the soft drinks. Dale j. —

Response:

It’s not blood sugar measurements alone. He needs a complete lab workup by an Endocrinologist specializing in diabetes management. I have type 2 diabetes and get by fine with oral medication that keeps my blood sugar under control. A GP did not help me. He needs a specialist right away.

And, of course, a good dietician. I.P.

Response:

does anyone know how high his blood sugar can go before he will need insulin injections?

He may *never* need insulin shots, but rather pills.  I have type 2 (diagnosed while I was recovering from my rrp), and I easily control it with three pills a day, and watch (or at least *try* to) my diet.   He should see a specialist and a dietician.  The specialist will get him on a correct medicine regimen, while the dietician will help him with his diet – what to eat and not to eat.  Type 2 diabetes has become very "popular" lately among Americans.  I suppose it is our diet.  But, it is easily treated. Response:

jhh is right, Howie. I have Type 2 diabetes also. I take oral meds to keep the Blood Glucose (sugar) under control. Your friend needs to be evaluated and then be given a plan (meds, diet, etc.) to get things under control. Ron B. Chicago
