Steve Don’t get me started on SE’s from ADT. (In this initial run, I’m up to 5/6, so 7 I haven’t experienced). Basically, your total immune system is weakened by ADT, so you need something to bolster it. Your PCP may suggest something. (one size doesn’t fit all.) The head nurse that administers the shots has told me of the "overlap" effect, which can be fairly savage for a few weeks. I’m having that now after copping one last Wed. With me, everything gravitates to my feet, due to the vascular probs I have as a spin-off from Diabetes type 2. Have you been inoculated against the major strains of ‘flu? This won’t help the common cold, but does give you some shielding. — Reader to complete… — Please reply to this ng as my email adress is fake: — Regards — CC

I’d say lurking is in the mind of the lurker… but, I digress.
I’d say lurking is in the mind of the lurker… but, I digress.

I haven’t really been lurking, but the office I’ve been using is only on a LAN, so can only come home to check out the ngs. Additionally, I haven’t had much to contribute or comment on these past 2 wks. I’ve never heard of cellulitis being an SE of RT or HT. However, I’d opt for RT if it were either. But, your best bet seems to be your diabetes. Or maybe a combination of diabetes and the stressed immune system from RT.

I’d lean toward the RT, as on the last week of sessions, I was feeling as if I had a extra pair of sox on immediately after each session. Peripheral Neuropathy from the NIDDM in both feet would also contribute to this. I never realised I could be stressed, though. At present, the cellulitis is gradually receding with the oral antibiotics, only now, but I’m resting up until it’s cleared up. Don’t feel like taking amputation on board at the moment. Thanks for your reply. — Reader to complete… — Please reply to this ng as my email adress is fake: — Regards — CC

Also get them off the soft drinks. Dale j. —

It’s not blood sugar measurements alone. He needs a complete lab workup by an Endocrinologist specializing in diabetes management. I have type 2 diabetes and get by fine with oral medication that keeps my blood sugar under control. A GP did not help me. He needs a specialist right away.

And, of course, a good dietician. I.P.

Response:

does anyone know how high his blood sugar can go before he will need insulin injections?

He may *never* need insulin shots, but rather pills. I have type 2 (diagnosed while I was recovering from my rrp), and I easily control it with three pills a day, and watch (or at least *try* to) my diet. He should see a specialist and a dietician. The specialist will get him on a correct medicine regimen, while the dietician will help him with his diet – what to eat and not to eat. Type 2 diabetes has become very "popular" lately among Americans. I suppose it is our diet. But, it is easily treated.
jhh is right, Howie. I have Type 2 diabetes also. I take oral meds to keep the Blood Glucose (sugar) under control. Your friend needs to be evaluated and then be given a plan (meds, diet, etc.) to get things under control. Ron B. Chicago

Response:

HI Paul… That sounds like a question for your doctor. 14 stone (196 pounds for the yanks) sounds pretty good for 6 foot 1 inch, my boyfriend is 191 and looks great at 5′ 11"… but that’s not a medical issue. All charts that I can find say between 165 and 190 so you don’t sound that far off. Frankly, without looking at you, I can’t tell what you SHOULD be. You could be quite muscular, and be 225# and very healthy (have friends that look like body builders but have an "unhealthy" BMI) (BMI’s are stupid btw, imo). If you looked thin everywhere else, but had a large belly, then you’d have more to go. Guess it depends on the body type. Lana

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I am male and am 6 feet one inch. I weigh 14 stone but was nearly 16 stone some time ago. I think I should be 13 stone. I have Diabetes am I still at risk with my Diabetes? Thanks.

What sort of diabetes – type 1 (insulin defendant) or type 2 (usually controlled by diet and oral drugs)? And what kind of risk are you asking about? If you eat properly, lose the excess weight, and take sufficient exercise, and are a type 2 diabetic, you may find the raised blood sugar levels lessen, but you will always need to be careful, and may need to stick to a diet that is lighter on foods with a higher glycemic index than the average unaffected person. If you are type 1, the only known and effective cure is a cell transplant: unless you come to Kent and emulate one of our local diabetics (the only one for whom this has so far effected a cure), you will always be diabetic, like my husband, and will always need to control it with insulin. The WW eating plan is an excellent one to follow if you are diabetic: type 2’s may need to jigger it in a lower carb direction, and this will need to be done carefully. Every person responds slightly differently, and it’s a matter of experimenting to see what works for you. With type 1, it may be necessary to alter the insulin dose slightly to take account of the lower volumes of food being consumed, along with raised exercise levels: DH, frequently adjusts his doses to cope with what we eat, when we eat, and his exercise regime. Yesterday was a good example of this: lunchtime dose was lower than average to take account of the 7 mile walk he and our son did round Ightham Mote yesterday afternoon, and was calculated carefully to take in a late dinner with a very healthy main course, and a dessert of Tarte au Citron and ice cream. Having diabetes of either sort need no stop you doing what you like: look to Sir Steve Redgrave as an excellent example! DH also does his bit – you can see some of his walking exploits on our web site. Hit the URL below and look behind his picture to see some of his exploits! — Kate XXXXXX R.C.T.Q Madame Chef des Trolls Lady Catherine, Wardrobe Mistress of the Chocolate Buttons http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk Click on Kate’s Pages and explore!

That would have had me scratching my head, too! If I were told that, I would have so many questions! I would first wonder which layer of the skin it is that is thicker? Would it mean that I could handle hot irons without injury? Do I need to use more skin lotion than most people? Would my skin caliper bodyfat measurements need to be adjusted downwards? Betty is purring that there aren’t any serious systemic medical problems.

Response:

Thank you, Christine and Victor. The news is not bad, though I really didn’t need another disease to worry about. I feel I’ve made too much of a mystery of this, so here’s the story. I’ll try to make it short.

about Re: Ping Marina: Marina, don’t worry, I have thick skin too and I have this hump just below my neck. And, you know, I also have juvenile diabetes (type I). My doctor hasn’t worried about anything so far, so I think we’re both safe. I do have high leaching of calcium, so you might want to have that checked out as it could lead to osteoporosis later on, but that’s easily corrected with medication like Fosamax.

So do you have any idea who the older woman is in the Fosamax ads? She looks somewhat familiar [I'm sure I should be able to recognize her from something other than those ads], but I cannot retrieve a name. — "Don’t mess with major appliances unless you know what you are doing (or unless your life insurance policy is up-to-date)." – John, RCFL

Response:

That is strange Marina, I’ve had trouble with my neck for the last six or seven weeks the Dr says its athritus, probably is, but when you hear of things like this, well it does make you wondermy pain goes rightup behind my ear and round the back of my neck. anyway I’m glad to hear that your feeling better about it and can get treatment. Jean.P.

Christine, Omar, Midnight, Oreo, Robin & Tucker Thank you, Christine and Victor. The news is not bad, though I really didn’t need another disease to worry about. I feel I’ve made too much of a mystery of this, so here’s the story. I’ll try to make it short. I’ve been seeing a physical therapist for some while for my neck and shoulder pains, and he found a lump on my neck. I went for an ultra-sound examination, and the good news is that it’s not a tumour, but the bad news is that I have abnormally thick skin. Apparently, everyone has this lump in their neck, but mine was noticeably because of the thick skin. The doc checked lower on my back and on my arms as well, and it is too thick everywhere. No wonder I’m stiff! You might think that having thick skin would be a good thing, but apparently it can indicate some systemic problem. Well, the doc I saw yesterday (Thursday) was my occupational health care doc, and when I told him about my diabetes and all its complications, he thought it would be better to refer me to my diabetes doc for this thick skin thing, too, because, as he put it, it’s better to care for the whole person than just one symptom, and the thick skin indicates an internal medical problem anyway. I’m happy with with being referred to my diabetes doc, because she knows everything about my health and will be able to piece it all together, as it were. So I’m waiting to see her, and will probably have to have a lot of tests done, but apparently the prognosis is usually good and it’s easily treatable, so I’m not worried any more.
ok. I think my doc has the calcium checked once a year (I have four check-ups a year, and one of them is a very thorough one, with lots of tests + ECG). Sorry it took me so long to mail it, these days you have to hand a box over to a postal worker (can’t just drop it off) and postal hours and my work hours make it difficult to do that.
Julie, thanks so much for going to this trouble. Looking forward to trying it out on Nikki! Or not. ;o) I seriously have no idea how she’ll react. Will just have to wait and see.
If you are trying to get a pump ( as you say in another post) this sort of manoeuvre will do yourself some good as well as your experience helping other diabetics in your area so I wish you well with your decision. To get the pump, you will need some clout, by being on the PCT will definitely help. The local consultant has children that he can not get the funding to put them on to a pump. He is raising funds by doing all sorts of different charity events himself. I believe you could do a lot of good if you get into the PCT, you are the sort of people that are needed, it will not be easy though, because they (the PCT) are set in their ways. — DaveT dx 1955 T1 BeefL + Humalog as required dave_mt&btopenworld.com change and to at to reach me

I also have some pretty serious heart complications, and high blood pressure and diabetes type stuff and gobs of other stuff wrong with me. I was on over a dozen medicines daily! The hospital that I was in had me fill out the application for disability – I would never have thought of it. I’ve never known anyone who was on it. Since then, as with the other 70% for first time applicants, I was denied flatly. And with the other 85% of folks who don’t give up, but ask for a Reconsideration, I was turned down flat. So I got a S.S. Disability attorney, and we requested a hearing. The appeal with the judge is Friday. I have learned many things over these long, difficult years – about the system and how to use the advantages. What I know that I know is an applicant must have written proofs, such as medical test results. I had 4 doctors who wrote letters saying I was disabled back 3 years ago when I first applied. But they were thrown out – I was told that a doctor is not a vocational expert and cannot make a disability determination. They can only report facts, such as test results. When my SSD attorney saw my medical records he said: this is 300 pages of bla, bla, bla. We only get 59 minutes in front of the judge. And he proceeded to "start over" getting the doctors, and therapists to write very specific language. So last time I had a very good case by MY standards and it went no where. This time, I have a pretty good case by THEIR standards. Also, I am older, which helps a person get approved, and have more than one illness documented. If I didn’t know the system at all, I’d say I’d win it this time. But knowing the system, nothing is sure. I now know that the judge has (and relishes) total power and we have to feed him what he wants, how and when he wants it. Of all the Administrative Appeals Hearing Judges in Tennessee, the guy I was assigned to is considered the toughest – so who knows. I do know that the judge has up to six months to make their decision, and if approved, up to 6 months to make the back-payments after that. So even IF I am approved, it could be a long wait before I get the 75% of whatever is available. (25% to attorney) I think the maximum is 24 months back pay – and they hold back 5 months as a deductible. So they still haven’t gotten into a person’s pocket unless they take longer than 29 months to make a ruling. Start to finish will have been about 5 years – for what common sense would have approved the first time…however, rather than griping about what I’ve missed, I’ll just be grateful if/when it is finally settled. But thanks for being kind. Rebecca http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-Messianic

DO you have a lawyer? i went through the soc-sec application process on my own, but after the 2nd turndown and requirement for a hearing, i got a social-security attorney for the hearing, and was approved immediately. i don’t know if he (my attorney) had as much to do with the approval as the doctor they had there to testify — she was wonderful. a neurologist with a lot of knowledge about M.S. she (the doctor) told the judge that she would find me disabled based on M.S. fatigue alone, even without the other physical problems i was having. getting a doc at the hearing who is knowledgeable about M.S. is a BIG factor — i would imagine there are many more of them these days than there were when i applied, nearly 10 years ago. since i did have a lawyer there with me, i let him handle things for the most part, till they asked me to testify and the judge had some questions. there was a guy from voc rehab there, but he didn’t talk to me — the judge asked him, based on what he had heard, did he think i was a good candidate for vocational retraining, and he said no — that was all she wrote. the only things i’d say would be common sense — be polite, even if the judge is a jerk, answer his or her questions courteously, don’t think that if you go off on them, they’ll be more likely to approve you, they won’t, they’ll just be more likely to take offense at you. if you have a lawyer, and s/he is a social security disability expert, let the lawyer handle whatever the judge lets him/her handle. if you’re going alone, i really don’t knwo — bring a list of your symptoms, a list of your doctors, clinics, etc. — even if they’ve been provided previously, having a list of them in case anything was left out is a good idea. other than that, all i can do is wish you luck, and i’m wishing it for you! rose

Well, really … that’s the most important thing. I looked at the site and I found things that I didn’t know, either.
You were complaining of constipation and listing off anticholinergic medicines that you take. I wasn’t offering you an alternative. I was merely telling you that you you were self-medicating with drugs that cause constipation. If you take anticholinergic drugs, espeically a great many of them at your age, expect to be constipated. As for what kind of pain I have to deal with, I didn’t go into that as it is irrelevant to your constipation, but just let’s say I’d get down on my hands and knees and weep with joy if my problems were so few in number. — "Did Father shoot him?
The drugs you are taking are constipating: Fiorinal contains codeine and hycosine and atropine (along with belladonna) are the main components of Donnatol, a medicine prescribed to halt cramping and diarrhea (atropine is also in Lotomil, another anti-diarrheal). Fiber does work for most people with constipation, and most find that starting with a small dose and gradually increasing the size over a few weeks causes the least discomfort. Eating things like sweet potatoes is helpful, too, if your diabetic management plan allows you to eat them. I have the exact opposite problem and take a large amount of Lomotil to attempt to slow things down, so I’m afraid I don’t have any first-hand experience with constipation, but I do know my antiperistalsis agents! — "Did Father shoot him?
I’m aware of the Codiene content in Fiorinal but I DO have PAIN to deal with from 3 sources by the time I’m ready for bed. I’m not aware of any Hyoscine and Atropine (Belladonna) in Fiorinal. The packet states: Paracetemol 500mg Codiene Phosphate 8mg Doxylamine Succinate 5 mg The Atrobel, I’ll grant you does say it helps to dry up gastric fluid secretion. The bottle states: Hyoscyamine Hydrobromide 92.5 microgram Atropine Sulfate 13.5 microgram Hyoscine Hydrobromide 9.9 microgram (I’m told it’s similar to Buscopan, which was originally prescribed for me by a GP).
Hello group When I found this group by googling around, I was surprised to see so few posts in it, seeing the large percentage of IBS sufferers in the world I’m m.69.au and IBS rules my day. (colic and constipation) However, after numerous "white knuckle" barium enemas dating back from the ’80s, plus several other "….scopies" , my Gastro-Enterologist, slammed down the lid on his laptop computer, effecting closure for him, and muttered…"you have mild diverticulae in the transverse, descending and sigmoid colon, and you seem to be stressful and in need of a good FART!…..here’s a scrip for some Amitryptiline, and they may help you….pay the receptionist on the way out" ($180.00). Also my GP told me to get into the fibre and prescribed some granocol. The Amitryptilyne worked but made me doughy-headed for the next day and mostly useless for work. The fibre bloated me more. The granocol helped a little. As I have a few other pain causing ailments, like osteo-arthritis in both feet, ankles and R knee, plus Peripheral Neuropathy in both feet from Diabetes Type 2, I found something called Fiorinal Anagesic-Relaxant in the chemist’s (pharmacy) drugs. This helps me get 5-6 hrs sleep, but during the week I only have constipated motions even when using the Granocol. An additional relaxant I use is also Atrobel (Hyoscine and Atropine).
think it would behoove the medical field to make home testing for PSA levels available so we could all test much more frequently than once every year or six months?

I ran a google search on the terms "PSA home test", and from reading a few hits, it appears that these are available from various vendors for about $39.00 per test. Some require a prescription. (NY patients) Has anyone in this group used one of these tests? Ernie Gudath 65 PSA 4.3 3/03; 5.6 5/03 Biopsy 1 5/14/03 ambiguous Biopsy 2 9/18/03 T1c Gleason 6 (3+3) Scans Negative RRP 12/11/03 Gleason 6, w/slight marginal, other tissues negative PSA <.1 2/04

Response:

I bought a home PSA test at a drug store for $29 and my daughter, who is a nurse, stuck my finger and put the blood sample in the little devise and it indicated that my PSA was nil. I knew I was to have a PSA test at the clinic the following week and that test said I was 44. I mentioned this to my urologist and he looked at me like I would be a good man to sell a used car to. Lewis Hender

Thanks to all of you for the input and advice. All of it was very informative. My blood sugars ran very high for eighteen years and I have lost most of my vision. I am paying the price for my indulgences unlike you men who got this through no fault of your own. I wish all of you well through your struggle. At least since I have been lurking here for a few months now I am well informed on certain options in case I get this. Do you think it would behoove the medical field to make home testing for PSA levels available so we could all test much more frequently than once every year or six months?
Thanks to all of you for the input and advice. All of it was very informative. My blood sugars ran very high for eighteen years and I have lost most of my vision. I am paying the price for my indulgences unlike you men who got this through no fault of your own. I wish all of you well through your struggle. At least since I have been lurking here for a few months now I am well informed on certain options in case I get this. Do you think it would behoove the medical field to make home testing for PSA levels available so we could all test much more frequently than once every year or six months?

Hey Bill; Just thought I’d pass this along for what it’s worth. I also have diabetes – type 2 and pretty much under control just by diet. There is alot of good information on diabetes located at Alt.Support.Diabetes.UK I realize that this is a Brittish site, but those who post there are very knowledgeable, helpful and there is just enough of the Brit humor(humour) to make it interesting. I never got much out the diabetes site here in the US, but the blokes across the pond were quite helpful when I was first DX. As far as home testing of PSA goes, I’m not sure how the lab end of that would work out without a Dr being involved somehow, but it might be worth looking into. Take care and g’luck M8 (:) Age – 68 8/12/02 – PSA 3.7 10/13/03 – PSA 4.69 11/11/03 – PSA 4.8 11/18/03 – Biopsy – 10 cores one core-25% of core-Gleason 4+4=8 all other cores benign tissue 12/10/03 – Consult – Oncologist 12/16/03 – Consult – Radiation Oncologist Treatment Plan – HT – started 12/17/03 – Eulixen & Lupron 2/10/04 – Started – Flowmax and Megastrol Radiation – IMRT to begin 3/14/04 – for 5 weeks Theraseed implant after Radiation completed

I noticed the original post came from WebTV. Someone in another newsgroup complained that they suddenly could only see posts from other WebTV users. That may be the problem here too. Sounds pretty stupid if its something WebTV did intentionally. Then again, maybe they’re trying to get a few customers to quit. says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -it’s not a diet, it’s a WOL, so there is no escape! :p The diet works, they’ve lost weight and moved on of course :) Peter I only have 466 posts , for 2 + years there has always been 1500 posts , are the low carbers quitting or have a lot moved to a different site?
Jenny, I was thinking this same thing yesterday! I know *I* was guilty. I went off my plan, first with a dinner at the home of friends late Friday night (beef bourguinon on buttered noodles, sigh!), and then snarfing some of the kids’ trick or treat candy yesterday. I paid dearly for my sins by being up most of last night with heartburn and the runs. It was, really and truly, a relief to get back on plan today. – Anne

Why not just plan ahead and get some LC candy to keep for you to help you avoid your kids candy? that’s what I do I ask this becos I have eaten a few things out of my ordinary routine but I didn’t call it cheating.
did you plan this cheat? if not, then how did it happen?

No. I had a glass of wine and it was late and I’d had a very protein-light salad at home at around 5:15 in all the rush of getting my son ready for trick-or-treating, the jack-o-lanterns lit, blah blah… so I was very hungry and tired by the time we were sitting down to eat around 9 pm with our friends. I started eating just the beef and vegetables, but… I just caved. No excuses; it was a lapse in a weak moment. Why not just plan ahead and get some LC candy to keep for you to help you avoid your kids candy? that’s what I do

Nothing can compete with an honest-to-goodness Reese’s p.b. cup! especially in multiples. 8-/ I bought a tiny little round cheesecake, about 2 1/2 in in diameter for my birthday, stuck a candle in it, sand HBTme and shared is with my kids.

This is good to remember. My birthday is in less than 2 weeks, and my DH will be out of town that day on business, so it will also be just me and the kids. I ask these ?s becos I am curious, not to pick on you or anything like that.
