Steps to Lengthen Your Life Span
Question:
I agree, and when I worked mostly from home for a few years I enjoyed it but did suffer a little from feelings of social isolation, but was not completely isolated since I still had church and choir and my family – which was my point that *complete* social isolation is pretty rare. I think Stacy F was right, though, in that it most likely referred more to older people who may be too ill to get our much and may not have any family around to interact with. — Debbie Cusick "When I get a little money I buy books: and if any is left over I buy food and clothes. Response:
Debbie, Not everyone works outside their home! Since my primary occupation is writing, I have made my living working in my livingroom forr the past 11 years. I could easily go for months interacting only with my immediate family. Since most other people are at work all day, there aren’t a whole lot of people to hang out with. Plus, most people my age who do work are so overwhelmed trying to keep up with kids and spouses and just plain keeping things running that they don’t have much time left for socializing. I don’t envy people who have to go to work every day. In a lot of ways I’m living the great "dream"–working a couple of hours a day whenever I feel like it and earning an income that puts me into the upper middle class. But isolation is a constant problem–particularly since I’ve found that if I am NOT isolated, my writing suffers, since I seem to require a lot of quiet time spent alone to do the thinking needed to be productive. That’s why I put in the time I do online, as it does keep me connected with other people. –Jenny http://server3.ezboard.com/blowcarbfordiabetes Low Carb for Diabetes Message Board

I think this is meant for situations like those where older people live alone and don’t go out much. You know, epidemiological studies frequently cited, like the ones that indicate that older men die at a much higher frequency if their wives just died (within a couple of years of the wives’ deaths), as compared to those in the same age range, whose wives are still alive. Apparently, women do much better in that regard. Pets supposedly help both groups though. My guess is that those sort of things are what is referred to here. In such a case, individuals with social ties tend to get sick less often and get well quicker. Allegedly, people who socially interact with others at least three times a month can lengthen their life by two years.

Well I wasn’t going to say anything because the only way I can interact with people and not get sick is to be on the NG. — Desire
