Question:
Hi, we have had Towee a Blue front amazon for 3 days now. She’s 5 years old. I’d like to know what the best diet is for her. She’s currently eating a bowl of fruit in the morning(blueberries, melon, apples, nectarines, plums, bananas, etc.). She also eats nutriberries, Kaytee exact pellets, dried fruit, graham crackers, and cereals through out the day. For dinner veggies like lettuce, peppers, carrots, more fruit, and some of our dinner. She gets peanuts and sunflower as treats, I know their not supposed to get much of those. She eats tons of fruit, can she get too much? She seems to eat almost anything offered. Today I put paper on her play pen to catch the mess. She started ripping it up, but I watched and she was actually eating little pieces. I took the paper away from her. Could paper eating mean she’s lacking something in her diet? Is there something more I should be giving her? Thanks for any info. Leah PS. Her previous owners never gave her pellets. When I gave her some of our Senegal’s Exact pellets and she started eating it right away! Thought they were supposed to be hard to convert to pellets!?!
Response:
Leah, if your bird eats anything you offer it you are a very furtunate person. Especially when your bird is alraedy five years old. The tend to get set in their ways very early in life. You might want to increase the variety of veggies you feed your amazon by includung the many varieties of beans and peas and also some broccoli. Marge & Gary Hoffner Bird people at large

Dan Spencer wrote in article <snip Anyone who is diabetic knows that carrots are very high on the glucose index. If I were you, I would cut down a bit on the fruit. A diet that high in sugar <snip I am a diabetic and was told by my doctors that carrots and all other veggies are considered "free" foods and do not contain amounts of sugars or carbos. That would cause harm in people with diabetes, I guess I am diabetic and didnt know? Andrew

Much deleted…. Sounds like you’re well on the right track for food. Hard to convert? One of the reasons amazons are my favorite is that they are always with it, they change and adapt practically instantly. **To respond to me via email, remove the ..nospam from my address**
