Question:

My wive, a mild depressive but I don’t know if it’s serotonin related, started taking  St John’s wort and Kava Kava , and she’s improved dramatically. In fact, I decided not to divorce her!!! (just kidding…) Adam Selene 237/197/190 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hello ,   I need your advice.  I tried the Adkins diet for six weeks, and I did manage to lose 13 wonderful pounds[40 more to go], but I became so low on serotonin, due to the depletion of the hormone, that depression was ruining my life.  Can a person lose excess weight on 25 carbs per meal?           Sincerely,               Teressa

Teressa, the answer is definitely yes. This serotonin thing is a puzzler. Many people feel much better, moodwise, on Atkins-flavor LC. But some people have reported that they experience a lowering of mood levels, and as you say it is a function of serotonin levels. I’m not going to give you advice here, because it’s a complicated topic. But I *am* going to suggest that you, and anyone else with this problem, get and read a copy of Diana Schwarzbein’s book "The Schwarzbein Principle". Dr. Schwarzbein is an endocrinologist and as such, her focus and conclusions seem to be a bit different than Drs. Atkins and Eades. She has a whole chapter on serotonin depletion that is well worth the read. (This book is readily available in paperback from Amazon.com or local booksellers). Linnen

You might try using Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet (CAD). While the weight loss is slower, I find it much easier to compensate the lack needed nutrients (and especially fiber!) by eating them during the reward meal rather than taking a lot of supliments. I’m new to this WOE, I’ve been following Atkins for a month. I am fairly certain that I’m insulin resistant (blood tests scheduled), so a low carb diet is important to my health and hopefully can help prevent diabetes. I have read that insulin resistance can cause mild depression, and low carb. diet can cause mild depression. Has anyone else heard of or experienced this?  If this is the case for you, you may look into St. John’s Wort or a prescription anti-depressant. It’s a catch 22. Good luck. Jan 221/214/140

20 carbs or less is for a two week period to get you solidly into Ketosis.  After that, some chose to stay below 20, but others chose to add back slowly (5 g/week) during "ongoing weight loss" phase.  So to answer your question, yes you can lose weight on 25 g/day.  If you haven’t bought the Atkins book, do so, it goes into great detail. Hey Teressa, Each person is different, but I would be surprised if you lost weight on 25 grams of carbohydrate PER MEAL.  That’s at least 75gm per day, which is pretty high in terms of staying in ketosis.  For most people, that much would be more like a maintenance level I think. When you say you became low on serotonin, what do you mean?  Did you have blood work done to determine this, or are you talking about feelings?  This is very important because being on a LC plan certainly alters one’s biochemistry — that’s why it works.  Feelings of depression may be part of the experience, especially at first.  There are strategies and insights that help deal with these feelings. Also, I wonder if you are seeing your emotions as directly linked to hormones, when there could be other powerful forces at work as well.  Changing one’s entire eating pattern, which impacts socialization, time, culture, and even money, is pretty disruptive apart from hormonal changes! Bottom line, for me, is that each person must find out what works for his/her body, and also look deep inside to find the motivation and courage to stick to a plan until it is achieved.  There are no quick or painless solutions!  In my opinion the number one killer of a low carb way of life is the victim mentality can’t I?"  I’m not saying that you have this attitude, but many of us struggle with it.  The body changes very slowly, and often reluctantly.
