Mailing Lists
Question:
: This has probably been asked many times, so forgive my re-asking it, but : what mailing list options are their for low carb dieters. I may want to : follow one. Okay, I confess…I’m a mailing list junkie.
I spend a lot more time on lists than on the newsgroup; even ran one a couple of times over the nearly 4 years I’ve been reading them. So this is right up my alley.
The 3 lists I’ve been involved with are at St John’s University. Short descriptions from the current listowner’s webpage (with my comments in parentheses) are: "LC-A is a forum for discussion and support for ALL diets and eating plans restricted in carbohydrates. . . a minimum of 1 Year following a restricted carbohydrate lifestyle is desireable before joining." (LC-A tends to be pretty low-volume, though we do have flurries of posting activity on occasion.) "LC-DIABETES is a support list for all persons controlling intake of carbohydrates as a method to control and manage Diabetes and avoid diabetic complications. All diet types and lifestyles are welcome." (Moderate volume, lots of techical info as well as a supportive atmosphere.) "The LOWCARB-LIST is a forum for discussion and support for ALL diets and eating plans restricted in carbohydrates." This list is the place to begin and is mandated to assist and support one another in the early stages of following the Low Carb way of life. There are over 2100 subscribers with a variety of knowledge and experience to share at all levels of expertise. (VERY high volume, specially now that Grant has the lists running mostly unmoderated. I recommend setting your subscription to digest mode, at least until you get an idea how much mail it generates. Instructions for changing settings are sent out when you subscribe.) To subscribe to any of them just send email to: with a blank subject line, and in the body, the command: sub {listname} firstname lastname (for example, to join lc-diabetes, the command would be: sub lc-diabetes Jane Doe or whatever your real name is) The listowner requires a real first and lastname when you subscribe, but anything in the name field of our outgoing email will over-ride that when you post. Also, the list of subscribers is only available to the listowner, so no one will know you’re subscribed unless you post to the list. (Substantially reduces the risk of spammers targetting the lists for their slimey purposes.) Oh, a word of caution: there’s also a list at SJU with the unfortunately similar name of "lowcarb", so make sure there’s a hyphen in "lowcarb-list" or you could find yourself on the wrong one.
(It’s also a good list; much more of an information list, than a support list, though. It’s the "technical" one of the bunch.) And, of course, there’s also Lee’s excellent Atkins-New list…but I’ll let him post about that, if he’s so inclined. And there’s a CAD-specific list (CADIS, I believe), but I don’t know enough about that one to comment on it. (Any subscribers here?) And probably a couple dozen other lists at other sites, besides… Roberta 210/121 PS Claudia, I’d like to get some advice from you for a newly-diagnosed Type II who’s not a good candidate for LC (high likelihood of kidney damage); could you email me if you get a chance? If you use the login name that shows up in this, and change the domain to atdot dot org, it’ll get forwarded to me. Thanks!)

There are several mailing lists in the ASDLC FAQ http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm#5b also several more on one of Lee’s lowcarb.org pages: http://members.tripod.com/~Dietman2/grant1.html You might be interested in the LC-DIABETES list on Lee’s page. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

I have a very low-bandwidth list for notification when the FAQ website changes. You might get a message or two per month, but it beats checking back to find that there haven’t been any changes. send a message to (that’s a period after request and a dash between asdlc & faq) with the word subscribe in the body of your message.
