Interesting Editorial: The fat rights movement

Question:

: —–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—– All this is well and nice … and perhaps should be posted in the alt.support.diet group …. : : —–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—– : : : : We certainly agree with the latter clause in that remark, but the fat : rights movement shouldn’t discourage sensible attempts to control the : obesity blamed for heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure and : approximately 300,000 deaths per year. In a nation where more than : half the : adult population is overweight, Saturday was nonetheless celebrated by the : National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance as "International No Diet : Day." : : The activists of fat pride evidently regard diets as an admission that : something is wrong with being fat. Yes, we know that diets are often : ineffective and that anorexia is probably a greater health hazard than : weight. All the same, lovers of Hawaiian music wish Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, : who weighed more than 800 pounds and breathed with a respirator, was still : singing "In Dis Life." : : Yes we know that diets are often ineffective and anorexia is probably a : greater health hazard than weight, but why should that make anyone want to : say anything bad about diets??? : : Perhaps I should point out a factual error in the editorial for you, Mr : Creosote.  As the editorial states, obesity kills approximately 300,000 : people annually in the US.  Approximately 300 people die of anorexia : related causes.  Now tell me, which is a greater hazard? : : As far as the effectiveness of diets, we ‘trolls’ in ssfa advocate : lifestyle changes, not diets.  Unfortunately, you do not have the : discipline to make a healthy change in your life. : : So then what did you do on International No Diet Day, : Business as usual.  You? : since you agree with : at least that part of the fat acceptance movement? : I think that it is more a matter of semantics.  I think that the lifestyle : change that I advocate to lose weight would be considered a ‘diet’ by NAAFA : since it involves weight loss.  Just to catch others up, I recommend : healthy eating choices to create a calorie deficit of 500 to 1000 calories : per day, depending on the person’s size, plus a regular exercise routine. : A 500 calorie per day deficit equals loss of one pound of fat per week. : This can be done without going hungry by choosing food more carefully.  I : don’t believe in Jenny Craig, Atkins, Weight Watchers, etc.  Permanent : weight loss depends on a healthy lifestyle change.  I have a propensity to : obesity, so I am living proof that it can be done. Now this is what i personally have no qualms about … now that we agree on this … there is a book I’d recommend called FIT FOR LIFE … It mentions eating foods in the right combinations … It points out the dangers of certain foods that we in the North American society are just taking the easy way out … Every state is guilty of this … Leave out the fat area of milk while we explore the other things founsd in milk and then weigh the facts carefully … Ask yourself the following questions: re: the desirabilty of MILK Who or what is COWS MILK designed to be fed to? Humans or baby calves? What chemical is in Milk that is used to make some favourite substances in the commercial world? If I mention CASEIN, do you know what CASEIN IS… it’s a prime ingredient in the manufacturing of GLUE   Ask yourself how much you need this substance in your body … Everytime you see an ad .. check how much the government is paying farmers to produce this sticky glue lining in every milk product you consume … now go one step further check who’s on the STATE MILK MARKETING BOARD … names of Doctors, Ice cream [yummy and sticky too!!!], Cheese, Butter, Cracker companies using WHEY [derivitives of milk] DRINK MILK, EAT BRAND NAME ICE CREAM, BUY BRAND NAME COOKIES [ingredients say butter, whey] says the MILK MARKETING BOARD ad … I do not as a rule have a lot of milk products around but will eat a slice of pizza once in a while …     : I read your message at work and I was able to put my philosophy into : practice today.  There is a woman that I work with who has actually been : doing pretty much as I advocate.  She has lost basically 12 pounds in 12 : weeks.  I have been offering her encouragement for the last few weeks.  She : goes to the health club at lunch time and works out for 30 minutes 5 days : per week.  This is really the only time that she can fit exercise into her : schedule with all of her obligations.  I about died when she told me that : she was going to start Weight Watchers because she is not happy with the : rate of her weight loss.  She told me that she needed a ’structured : program’ and needs the incentive of being weighed publically to motivate : her.  She told me that she should have lost 30 pounds by now.  I suspect : that she got that figure from WW.  She went on to show me a picture of her : before she started her plan.  Her face was very round in the picture and : she looked very bloated. Her skin did not have the glow that it does now. : She looks at least 20 pounds lighter now than she did in the picture.  I : had almost forgotten what she looked like.  She let me know that she is : losing inches, but the pounds are coming off fast enough in her opinion.  I : told her that she is on the right path and that her body is gaining muscle. : I went on to tell her that the added muscle will help her burn calories : later.  Not only does her skin have the aforementioned glow, but her face : has a nice shape and is not round.  Her body is also proportionate even : though she is overweight, as in NOT obese.  By the way, she confides these : things in me because I do encourage her and she knows that I was once in : her shoes.  To help her with a ’structured program’, I sent her several : links to Web sites that offer sensible weight loss advice.  I encouraged : her to read all of them and make an informed choice.   This is exactly why I oppose those diets what happens is not the way to do it … WW, JC, SlimFast, Nutraslim, and you naame it … every single one stinks because of one gimmick or the other … : All was fine until later this afternoon.  She came up to me to tell me that : she was going to do the Slimfast diet because some of the heavier women in : my workgroup were going to be doing it.  Believe me, some of them are : heifers. I was told that the others had taken off weight a few times by : using Slimfast.  I told her that was the problem!  They can take it off, : but they can’t keep it off.  I went on to tell her that very low calorie : diets will make you lose fat and muscle.  I continued to explain that if : and when they lose the weight, it will come right back because they will go : back to their old eating habits and they have done previously.  She agreed : with that. At this point, all I could do is let her know that she is making : good progress, to be patient,  and just to follow the same path.  She : agreed to stay the course and I told her (honestly) that she looks great.   : Incidentally, her weight gain was due to having a child and a subsequent : surgery. She lost the weight with Jenny Craig previously, but gained it : back.  She understands why it happened.  I was told that JC cost her $85 : per week.  I asked her if they justified the price in order to make the : participant feel commited.  She nodded ‘yes’.  I explained that is a tactic : used to justify the outrageous price of the program.   : : And since I gave up the diets, my lifestyle has been much more healthy and : there have been changes in both what I notice (improved health) and in what : you notice (weight loss). : Donald you have much credibility to healthy and permanent weight loss as I : do to programming.  If you don’t give advice about weight loss, I’ll not : give advice on programming, your area of expertise. : : Donald : : — : Donald Brown : http://www.eamontales.com : : We have met the enemy and he is us – Pogo : : : —–BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE—– : Version: N/A : iQA/AwUBORtPZTL3IlvsWvnjEQIxmQCePHjg/2ipMfkAb5Y6klRidgscqRMAoIbE : sGYBkM9kZ6cVhkZy7l7aWPwX : =tmLw : —–END PGP SIGNATURE—– — Rebbe Nachman of Breslov’s Teaching: it’s a great Mitzvah to be Happy always

I am sorry, but I really think you need to know what you’re talking about. I joined WW 7 weeks ago and I have lost 15 lbs already. That is more than 2 lbs a week. Some weeks I’ve lost 0.5 lbs other weeks 3.5…There is no "rate" WW expects us to lose weight at. It is not a race. Also there is not starvation or hunger or gimmicks on WW. You can eat what you want withhn your daily pointrange that is calculated by calories, fat and fiber. There is no "magic" involved – just eating in moderation! For me it works. I stay commited because I go there and get weighed every week for 10 bucks. That is 2.5 MacDonald’s dinners I have avoided per week!!! WW is not whether you "believe in it " or not. If you follow it, you will lose weight. And in the meantime you’ll learn healthy eating habits and how to make the right choices so you can eat MORE food and be satisfied, while losing weight. And when you have reached goal it will stay off, if you continue to follow the WOE/WOL! It is very simple. Some people can do this on their own. I tried and failed. With WW I know exactly what to do. –Mette

[snip] And then again, perhaps it shouldn’t have been.  You take an awful lot on yourself deciding what should and shouldn’t be posted in the asd newsgroup, Lindsay.  Maybe you should just leave well enough alone.
