How Sick Am I ?
Question:
=18 months ago I wa checked for high blood sugar.First test came back =360 after 12 hr fast so I took all the noticable sugars out of my diet ie =pop cookies pie and all the good stuff.next test was 180 so the doc put =me on 1 micronaise a day, told me to loose weight weight, excerise more =eat =smaller more frequent meals and NO BEER.Ouch.I was a truly great home =brewer. Now i’am holding at 160 and feel fine(silent killer ?) Tes tape =says I nerver spilll sugar in to my urine. =HOW SICK AM I ? Well, 160’s a bit high, but not incredibly so. =Is it really possible to totally control(adult onset)diabetes with diet & =excersise ? I’am 43 and otherwise in pretty good health. Some people can do so, most of the time anyway. Others can do so for a limited time. Still others can’t control the diabetes through diet and exercise alone. It’s something that varies from individual to individual, and even varies over time for a particular individual. I try very hard to say exactly what I mean. I’d appreciate it if you’d bear that in mind and not try to "interpret" my posts to fit your own preconceived notions if I’m posting in a serious thread. Remember: If you throw a strawman into a heated debate, flames are likely to be the result.

Ouch. Consider taking that one up with your doctor: one beer, as part of dinner, replacing whatever starches you would eat with that meal. That’s how I handle the calories, although I’m insulin dependent. Don’t drink too much, of course, apparently large amounts of alcohol can cause a dangerous *drop* in blood 3 hours later as the liver handles the alcohol instead of glycogen. This would be more dangerous for Type I’s like me thatn Type II’s, like you, but still it’s hazardous. Nico Garcia

Now i’am holding at 160 and feel fine(silent killer ?) Tes tape : says I nerver spilll sugar in to my urine. Urine tests may not be telling the whole story. It depends on what your threshhold is. If you spill sugar at 180, then you know you haven’t gone above 180, and you’re probably doing OK. But what if you don’t spill until you’re over 240? You can walk around with sugars high enough to do damage and never know it. Maybe you should consider blood testing, if you’re not already doing it? : Is it really possible to totally control(adult onset)diabetes with diet & : excersise ? I’am 43 and otherwise in pretty good health. For some people it is. For some, it isn’t. But you don’t know whether you’re in control without some blood testing! Good luck! Natalie A.
