Question:

suddenly gotten very bad. She has used up all the glucagon, drank 3    glasses O.J., and husband has left to get her more glucagon. That’s a LOT of emeregency glucose.. Is she testing her BG’s as she’s doing this?  Please say yes. And give us the numbers.  I don’t care which standard but please specify the units so I can convert properly (Sounds like her BG’s may be in the range where assumption may be in error) Meanwhile… We’ll think about her  "Nothing adds excitement like something that is none of your business" Get forgiveness now – tomorrow you may no longer feel guilty.    But you know, water is certainly more tasty than I would have expected. Well Michael…. I’m afraid that water tasting that good may well be a symptom of you know what because I made that discovery myself….. Just prior to DX

I didn’t discover H20 until after diagnosis when I found that my usual liquids were suddenly bad ideas. I wonder if this "tasty water" thing should be listed as an official symptom — beyond the usual "excessive thirst". I can see it now: "Does water taste good to you? You may have diabetes!" –Michael

suddenly gotten very bad. She has used up all the glucagon, drank 3 glasses O.J., and husband has left to get her more glucagon. She can’t think and can barely raise her arms. She is going to lie down. She said if she at least knew the rest of us were thinking about her and sending her some strength, it would help. She has a dr. appt. January 24th and was so happy about how well her diabetes was doing. This is the first crisis she has had since September 30th. If you want to send her e-mail, her husband Kraig can probably retrieve it and read it to her if she can’t get to the computer. Also, if you have any helpful suggestions… Shirley was exhibiting nearly fatal symptoms 9 years ago, and her amazing turnaround since then is miraculous. We need to share our courage and humor with her to get her through this crisis. Come on, Shirley gal – we’re pulling for you. Susie

Gosh, it takes *forever* to get the messages posted to this Usenet. Over a day has passed since I wrote the foregoing.      Meanwhile, worried about Shirley, I got up at 4 am and found two postings. She is doing fine now. The state of her health is so precarious that any changes in her schedule can mess her up. She goes into convulsions when hypoing, and had reinjured a chronic problem caused by frozen shoulder.      Anyway, she is doing quite nicely now – her same fun-loving self – and thanks her husband and everyone here for their support. In case it escaped you, many people find the drinking of sweet tasting, flavored, carbonated beverages to be an extreamly pleasurable experience. To many people, that alone is enough to cancel out most of the objections as what is "good for you" etc. It would be a pretty boring world if people always rationalized away what they enjoy. S. F. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m not convinced that soda is a "good" drink for anyone. As far as I can tell, there is nothing "good" in it and several questionable substances. At best, it is a neutral drink.

So what’s the problem?  Diet soda is a GOOD drink for a diabetic. Well, As someone else pointed out GOOD is not necessarly a good choice of descriptions.  NOT BAD might be more accurate. However there is an old saying "Too much of a good thing can be bad" The reason I quote this is that Too Much diet soda can be bad. What’s too much?  Well there is some discuussion on that but in some circules it’s recommended that you keep consumption down to under aboutu 1500 ounces per day (120 cand if you wish to get specific)  People who have hit 250 12 oz cans in one 24 hr period have been known to have problems after "just one can" of diet pop… That was can # 251 for the day if memory serves.  Deffently too much ***NOTE*** if you have any better (more accurate) information on how much that pilot had to drink I won’t dispute it.  Memory is good. Verly nearly photographic.  But the film is a bit fogged there and 251 was as close as I could read it.  "Nothing adds excitement like something that is none of your business" Light year: A regular year without calories. Hey, guys! Jack Daniels is an excellent drink. As long as you don’t pollute it with sugary or other carbohydrate laden mixes, it does wonders for you. This is completely scientific, you understand, but the last two times out to dinner, it was my observation that the alcohol from two Jacks on the rocks completely cancelled out the uptick from the the baked potato, two rolls and the slice of cheesecake that followed it.  That’s two out of two.  I’ve been looking for a reason to take more readings.  All in the interest of medical research, you understand. OHMIGOSH Bill, I hope that you are talking about bottled water at least and not that stuff that they pass off on us from the faucets here in Dayton.  It would be safer to drink out of a mud puddle than that stuff.   It don’t even make good tasting coffee!!!!   ;-) Fred Fred Peerenboom

To be absolutely truely perfect, it needs to be small pieces of crushed ice. –Michael

Half a gallon, at least. That’s 8 eight-ounce glasses a day. During the summer, when I sweat a lot, I can drink up to 2 gallons a day. And filter it, unless you have very good tap water. Jane

HI I need some assistance.  My mother-in-law is a diabetic and she drinks litres and litres of diet pop daily.  I am concerned with the amount she drinks and she said to me today that she is also concerned.  But she does not know what else she can or should be drinking.  If anyone out there has any recipes for drinks suitable for a diabetic I would really appreciate it if you would e-mail them to me.  Or direct me to where I should be looking for them. Thanks very much. Sincerely,   Joss

The first thing you need to do is find out whether she has her blood sugar under control. When I was diagnosed I was drinking water like crazy. Once the blood sugar was somewhat under control the thirst pretty much went away. I’d be asking my doctor about the problem if it persists. — John R. Zeigler

So what’s the problem?  Diet soda is a GOOD drink for a diabetic. Is her diabetes perhaps not in good control?  Excessive thirst is a typical symptom of undiagnosed, uncontrolled diabetes.  But if her blood sugar is normal, what’s the harm in drinking a lot of diet soda? After all, doing so is a good way to keep from eating too much food, thereby causing high blood sugar.   Perhaps you should make sure she is testing her blood regularly and has good control of her blood sugar. dkc David Cohler, South Pasadena, CA Media Access Consultancy http://members.tripod.com/~dcohler/

If she’s drinking a lot because she’s in a very hot place, and not because she’s got high blood glucose levels, and wants for some reason to avoid the sweetening agents in diet drinks, then she could try the unsweetened fizzy waters (Perrier with a twist of lime, etc).   Or just plain water, sparkling or still. If she’s drinking a lot because her bgs are high, then the trick is to get the bgs down, and then the drinking will cure itself. — Pat Reynolds

I need some assistance.  My mother-in-law is a diabetic and she    drinks litres and litres of diet pop daily. What else can she drink…. WATER.  Pure and filtered WATER. (I do recommend a filter. Britta’s are nice if your water is not too bad.  If you got really nasty water there are more expensive, and effective, filter systems you can buy) However if she’s drinking that much I’d guess that her BG’s are way out of wack.  LIkely still very high and she is likely spilling sugar in her urine That is why she’s so thursty all the time.  Getting BG’s under controll will help to controll the thrist and solve the problem… Naturally.  "Nothing adds excitement like something that is none of your business" Kennedy Family favorite sexual position: Defendant. Yeah, I discovered it a few months back and now it is my beverage of choice. As a former 6-pack of Coke user, very once & a while though, I crave something with a little more of a bite. But you know, water is certainly more tasty than I would have expected. –Michael
