Having Difficulty. Any suggestions?
Question:
Wasn’t your cholesterol test a fasting test? If that was the case, there is no way the doctor could eliminate hypoglycemia. All a fasting blood sugar can eliminate is severe diabetes. Even people with early diabetes may still have normal fasting blood sugars. Blood sugar swings and relentless weight gain are sympotms of early diabetes. You need a glucose tolerance test, or at least some post-meal tests to see what is going on. If your doctor doesn’t understand this, you need a new doctor. — Jenny 168.5/141 9/1998 – 8/2001 and 11/10/02 – Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi! My first post. I’ve been practicing Atkins on and off since 1998 and can boast 164 cholesterol and 74 triglycerides (just tested last week). Put that in your pipe & smoke it Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers AND all the Atkins naysayers! In the past couple of years I’ve put on 20 pounds and I’m now finding it incredibly difficult to lose weight, believe it or not. I’ve been on induction for four weeks and have only lost 6 pounds. I am very aware of hidden carbs, so I know what to watch out for. I keep my carbs to 20 or less. I am running 3 miles a day at fat burning rate (23 beats per 10 seconds). I have cut caffeine to 2 decaf teas a day, and have 1 diet soda. Sometimes I’ll have hypoglycemic-like experiences like constant hunger and feeling faint or cranky if I haven’t eaten. I had my blood sugar tested at the same time as the cholesterol. My doctor eliminated hypcoglycemia. Why am I not continuing to lose?

if you are feeling faint, cranky, or hungry between meals, then you may like to try having several small meals instead of 3 large ones… or look at how much fat and protein you are eating as well as counting carbs… you may not be eating ENOUGH of them to fuel your metabolism… which can sometimes also slow weight loss …your body begins to think that it’s starving and shuts down fat burning to protect itself

I have had trouble losing when I exercised. I don’t know why but I will bet that if the body thinks we need to get away, walk or run, or lift heavy stuff, it shuts down so it doesn’t lose too much. I have NEVER had success when I exercised. (Oh, boy, I am going to catch h*ck over that one).
Wow. I *have* to exercise in order to lose at any appreciable rate. Just goes to show how everyone’s different. Emily 232/210/175 (first goal) LC + weightlifting since 11 March 2003

In article Is there a chart or formula to tell you how many calories to eat according to body weight. I dont count calories but most days I know that I am not anywhere near where I used to be. I may be in your too few catagory.
The rule of thumb I think I’ve seen around here is 8-10 calories per pound of body weight. That’s current weight, not goal weight. Priscilla — Minutus cantorum, minutus balorum, minutus carborata descendum pantorum. (thanks be to topfive.com)

Seems to me like a LOT of people, including myself, stay at the induction level for too long. Once I started adding 5 carbs per week, I started losing again. I try to get between 30 and 35 grams of carbs a day now. This way you have a leeway on going back to induction if necessary. Way to go on the cholesterol numbers! — Kelly 270/242.5/199 for now Start Date : April 21, 2003 July Challenge Goal : 237.5

I am not sure as to how overweight you are if your running 3 miles with a strong heart rate. Perhaps your adding a little muscle with the running. This is why boxers cant go down a lot in weight. If they do they usaully are weaker from losing muscle mass. Check your size and see if your re-distributing the weight. IF your weight is around the belt then you may need to target that area a little. Congrats on your cholestrol. frank

A glucose tolerance test might give you more information on your insulin response and any tendency for hypoglycemia. From what I read, you need to vary the standard GTT by measuring insulin levels at each blood sugar reading as well as adrenaline production at the point where the blood sugar level bottoms out. What you get with this data is your hypoglycemic index and more accurate judgment of your condition or tendencies. I think I have also read a warning about going on and off of Atkins… maybe in Dr. Atkins’ book. I don’t know the scientific basis but I thought I remember something warning about weight loss difficulties with this yo-yo affect of dieting versus a constant WOE. At least something to research… Kevin
