Response:

Dan, there is help available for people who were sexually harmed as children. I was one of those children, and got help as an adult, and the ‘large’ problems of that recovery are resolved. I don’t know if you were harmed as a child or not,

LOL! I can pretty safely say I was never sexually abused.

LOL! Are you really this stupid Gary or do you just play an idiot on usenet?
Response:

I’m not getting all involved in some "investigation" that I don’t give a rat’s about. Your name looks a lot like the one you’re telling me is a criminal, so what am I supposed to think? And again, why would I care? Management of sex-offenders is the job of law-enforcement, not the health-care people, and it isn’t a concern of mine. Why don’t YOU just answer the question. If you can’t do that, it’s probably not worth answering. It’s *certainly* not worth me probing all around. Gordon Prick up in Canada is of utterly no concern to me, and I continue to wonder why it’s of concern to you, and further – why you bring it here.
Thank you for looking that up. I’m sorry your family member has that problem at a young age. The whole family there will have to be committed (which ultimately is a commitment to saving his life) to dietary change. I emailed the links to my sister so she can get him started on some supplements. He was on a strict diet at first, but now he is going back to his old ways of eating. Last night he had 3 pieces of cake and some ice cream. He got very hyper after that, abnormally hyper. I know he’s not getting any shots. Not yet anyway!!

Question:

I see my psychiatrist on Thursday, but before then I thought I’d ask. My job has some REALLY stressful/maddening moments. It’s a very tough place to work if you actually want to get work done. As such, I’ve had some more anxiety than usual lately. What’s worrying me, though, is that my blood pressure has gone up. I cycle a lot. I exercise almost daily. So my resting heart rate is usually 55. My blood pressure usually 119/59. Of late it’s been as high as 158/89 and has been hovering in the 129-138 range on the upper end and hasn’t dropped back down to what’s normal for me. I haven’t changed my diet significantly except to eat more soy (less turkey) and to do other things to cut out sodium. So aside from anxiety, I don’t know what else could be causing it. So a few questions. For someone already on 3mg of Klonopin (for like the last 3 years) does this sound anxiety related? If so what would my psychiatrist do? More Klonopin or a different medication? If it is related to stress what can I do to stop the cycle right now? I feel like nothing (relaxing music, meditating, etc. is working). And thus I’m getting frustrated and thus the above isn’t working. How do I dial down the stress on my own when it gets like this? Finally, if it’s somehow physiological and not psychological, what can I do then aside from seeing my doctor, lowering sodium, etc.? I already exercise. What else helps? Any help or advice is appreciated. Preston — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Stress can elevate ones blood pressure. Whether or not this is what is causing yours to be high can only be determined by your doctor. I suggest if you keep getting higher numbers to talk to your MD. Are you feeling more anxious, even with the 3 mgs of klonopin? If you are, then make sure to tell your pdoc. You may need the klonopin tweaked a bit to help you get through the next few weeks. Recently I read that eating a few bananas, and garlic, everyday could lower blood pressure. Here is a interesting link…. http://www.pamf.org/patients/tipsbp.html The more you panic about your blood pressure, the longer it will stay elevated. How often are you taking your bp? Make sure to be at rest for about 20 minutes before you take a reading. Make sure the cuff fits properly otherwise you can get an inaccurate number. Instead of trying to force yourself to relax, do some fun things for yourself, perhaps relaxing will come more naturally when you are distracted. Good luck!! P.S. I know you`ve had sinus problems in the past. By any chance are you taking sudafed, decongestants or allergy pills? They have the potential to raise blood pressure.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I see my psychiatrist on Thursday, but before then I thought I’d ask. Preston

Preston this is going to be long so have a seat First-your pressure readings are not that high-so relax! BP fluctuates all the time-I can take mine now and get 150/90 and retake it within a minute and it is 136/87 and then again it can go lower or higher depending on how it is compensating. BP is a compensatory mechanism that supplies the cells of your body oxygen, glucose and nutrients as it needs it-it works off of a feedback loop involving the cardio and vascular sustem as well as the nervous system and our good ol friend adrenaline. So that said, if you get anxious your pressure can go up instantly, relax and it goes down a little slower-as it goes down the systolic responds faster-so the top number goes down first the bottom or the diastolic goes down a little slower-as ones goes down the other goes up a bit this is homeostasis or equilibrium of pressure within the blood vessels-a law of physics if you will-as the veins receive less pressure from the arteries, they are not pushed open as much so the pressure may go up temporarily and then go down as they vessel dialates a bit being relaxed-what I am saying is the bottom and top have a ratio-this ratio is more important sometimes then the numbers provided the numbers are not beyond primary stage hypertension-primary stage is numbers below 140 on top and 90 on bottom-sustained over a period of time like 2 days or so—There are new guidlines for hypertension which for most men are ridiculous to acheive-anything under 140 on top sustained is fine provided you have no other organ system damage like diabetes, renal artery disease or stenosis, cardiac damage like left ventricular hypertrophy, congestive heart failure, stage 3 or greater murmer etc…, or retinal damage form prolonged pressure, brain embolism or bleeding-in other words if you don’t have serious organ damage 140/89 is borderline hypertension-above that you start staging it. Your pressure will spike and drop all the time-the resting bp rate is the one you need to look at-thi is acheived while you are relaxed, deeply relaxed, your arm limp as a dead fish, while you sit upright, legs uncrossed, your arm parrellel to your heart so you need a pillow to prop it up, and no distractions like talking, tv, phones ringing , gum chewing, and no food or excercise 1/2 hour before taking your pressure-make sure your machine is calibrated properly, if it is old-get a new one. want lower pressure-watch for hidden salt in foods look up DASH diet-increase veggies, fruits and lower fats and protein salt bearing foods include soda, bread, cookies cake and pastry, candy, fast foods, frozen foods, tuna, peanut butter, -look for sodium content on foods and get low salt versions-prepared lunch meats are loaded-don;t eat them-make your own turkey, roast beef etc… or eat grilled chicken on salads etc.. don’t drink alcohol it raises pressure, don’t smoke, use caffeine. If you are overweight lose the pounds-increase aerobic excercise to 1/2 hour a day-don’t lift heavy weights use light reps instead if you lift. all else fails meds are essential-each ,med you take will drop pressure about 10 points-about the same as cutting out salt or excercising etc…. there are several classes of meds to try-most are tolerated failry well since so many people are using them-sadly, I can’t. Anxiety can elevate pressure-relaxaing can lower it-if you find that nothing lowers it to below that magic number of 140/90, you may have vascular stiffness just from your genetics and age that requires meds to lower the pressure and reduce your risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney, or eye damage-any questions ask away–just went through this myself — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

My situation is just about the same as yours. My blood pressure went up for no apparent reason. My diet was the same as it had been for years. The only differences were that I had exercised a lot during the previous year which I hadn’t done before and I am no longer on Serzone (banned by our darned government). So a few questions. For someone already on 3mg of Klonopin (for like the last 3 years) does this sound anxiety related? If so what would my psychiatrist do?
I know the frustration you must be feeling. Only your doctor can advise you about the medication situation. I am trying hard to lose weight, lower my blood sugar level, and cholesteral intake. I own a Palm Zire 72, and was thinking that it could help. It syncs with a macintosh laptop running OSX. I know that some of you that respond to this post will give me vague answers, or tell me info I already know, so let me be clear what I need the software for. I need some good software that not only has a huge food database, but is easy to use, and can sync its food log, charts, and other detailed info with my Mac laptop. I want it to give me detailed info on the sodas I drink per week, and other vital information for someone with high blood sugar. No I am not diabetec, but if I continue at the high candy eating, soda drinking, and such I may one day end up one.
James 1:4 James 5:11 Galatian 6:9 Just trust in Him and eat less and excersise more. He will provide. Use your points tracker from Weight Watcher meetings and it will work better then any PDA program. I’ve tried many PDA programs with no success, then I turned it over to the Lord and became obedient . Weight Watchers will allow a change in habits that caused weight gain. Blood sugar readings will go down with excersise and as little as a 10% weight loss. TGBTG.

Why do you guys drink SODA anyways? Don’t you know it’s such an ignorant habit?

Response:

I still think diet sodas can make you fat. Aspartame is a neurotoxin.

Response:

Think about it. Who drinks a lot of soft drinks? Who drinks diet soft drinks? People who are looking for a sweet, oral stimulation. And people who have trouble maintaining their weight or are already overweight. People who maintan a normal weight without much effort will drink regular sodas. So, people who need a lot of sweet oral stimulation and who have trouble with their weight. That group is going to contain _far_ more people who go on to become more overweight or obese. Pretty darned obvious. It is studies like this that really make you wonder about the researchers – motives, IQ, etc.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The researchers are quick to point out that their findings are subject to interpretation. Maybe as the volunteers began to gain weight, they switched from regular pop to diet drinks < and not to something nutritious.

Heaviest Man The heaviest person in medical history was Jon Horton of Calgary CA, who had suffered from obesity since childhood. He was 185 cm (6 ft 1 in) tall and weighed 178 kg (28 st) in 1963, 317 kg (50 st) in 1966 and 442 kg (69 st 9 lb) in September 1976. In March 1978, Horton was admitted to University Hospital, Toronto, where consultant endocrinologist Dr. Robert Schwartz calculated that Horton must have weighed more than 635 kg (100 st), a great deal of which was water accumulation due to his sleep apnea and diabetes. In order to get Horton to University Hospital, it took a dozen firemen and an improvized stretcher to move him from his home to a ferry-boat. When he arrived at the hospital, saturated with fluid and suffering from heart and respiratory failure, he was put in two beds lashed together. It took 13 people just to roll him over. After nearly two years on a diet of 1,200 calories per day, he was discharged at 216 kg (34 st)

Thanks, Wolf. I appreciate the reassurance that I’m not just being cruel….

Response:

Have they tried putting the dog on a home made diet to deal with the allergies. If nothing else works often this is the solution to the whole problem with allergies and skin problems. Yes it will cost more to home cook for him but you’ll save it in vet bills. And as far as the cost of the insulin it’s not that expensive for all the more your dog takes and your wife sounds like a jewel for taking care of him.

We hope to get a dog one of these days and I am interested in the home made diet. We adopted a dog who had severe skin problems. He lost all his hair and scratched a lot. I would bathe him with special soaps and he got shots every 2 or 3 weeks. When he was about 13 we finally had him put to sleep. The vet had been urging us to do this for a year or so. It is so hard to give up like that. Anyway when we do get a dog I think I will cook for him, so do you have website that can tell me what to cook?

Response:

I haven’t heard of a home made diet for dogs — I’ll have to take a look at that. Thanks My wife already spoils me beyond imagination!!! I’m thinking about increasing her life insurance because I would have to hire 3 people to do all the things she does for me! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Have they tried putting the dog on a home made diet to deal with the allergies. You can only hope that she cares as much for you if your health should ever come to that. My dog has had diabetes for a few years and has gone blind from it. We give him insulin shots daily (my wife won’t tell me how much it costs!) He also has terrible skin allergies that cause him to smell horrendously. I can barely stand to be in the same room with him. The allergies also cause him to scratch and bite himself constantly, which aside from being annoying, causes his fur to get wet and smell even worse. It’s embarassing to have company over. He can’t hold his bladder for more than a few hours, which limits the time we can spend away from home. We’ve made countless trips to vets to address his allergy problems, but medication choices are limited because of his diabetes. My wife bathes him twice a week with medicated shampoo (per doctor’s orders.) This is how his day goes: Wake up, pee outside, scratch, scratch, chew, chew, eat dog food, scratch, scratch, poop outside, eat his own poop, scratch, scratch, chew, chew, stink, stink — well -you get the idea. The point is, I want to put him to sleep, but my wife and daughter think that would be cruel. He’s only 10 years old (a small terrier mix) and doesn’t seem to suffer, but he can’t do any doggie activities anymore, and he’s costing a lot of money. It would be hard for me to put him down, but that would be true even if he was truly needing it. Am I jumping the gun on wanting to put him down???

Response:

We put our 18 year old sheltie mix down last year when she went blind in addition to her other problems (arthritis, incontinence, bad hygiene, constipation, lack of appetite, etc.). It was very difficult for us, traumatic at the very least. We had tried various medications and regimens and nothing seemed to work well. But it was the right time. We were fighting a losing battle and although she didn’t seem to be terribly uncomfortable it wouldn’t be long before she fell on the stairs or developed more painful conditions. 10 years old isn’t that young, I think of 12 as a nominal age for passing of most dogs. You will be doing him a favor of saving him from a long, uncomfortable decline and a poor quality of life. There are lots of dogs at rescue organizations that need loving families. Our new girl is a joy who really appreciates having a home. I can’t express the terrible pain and guilt we felt when we put ours down but it was the right decision for us. No one can tell you what the right thing is for you to do, but you should know that euthanasia is a valid and humane option. Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My dog has had diabetes for a few years and has gone blind from it.
I think you should consider a dry food like Science Diet. It is just more nutritious, she will eat less Science Diet is high priced garbage full of by-products and CORN, which nort nly is a common allergen, but SteveG posted a study that showed corn gluten meal (also in SD) was determined to be problematic and could be detrimental. Not much better than the garbage being passed off as cat food at your local grocery stores, not to mention the fact that dry food is NOT an appropriate diet for cats. Frankly I’m shocked that, as long as you have been reading the newsgroups, you’ve chosen to ignore all the evidence that bears this out.

I agree with you about Science Diet (but none of my cats would ever touchd it – dry OR canned – the few times I tried to feed it to them). However, any number of vets recommend "premium" dry food, unless your cat has UTS problems.

Response:

I dont really think you can feed a cat too much unless they are big cats who eat a lot because they*are* big, or a cat that has an unusually large appetite, I feed Wilson a sm; tin of wet food mornings and fresh meat evenings and like you dry food is there always, mostly he leaves half the tin, just nibbling at itthrough the day, I pick it up when it dry’s out, sometime he gollups his fresh meat down and somtimes hardly touches it prefering the dry, until henri got sick with his kidney’s at 13 years old he ate very well except he had chicken breasts cut up instead of meat, Wilson wouldn’t eat chicken. regards Jean.P.

Hi, I feed my Sassafras (Sassy) wet and dry food. After reading several of the post regarding feeding, diets and what not, I think maybe I feed her too much. Her vet has never said anything about her being over weight, actually when they weighed her Wednesday she was 13

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – You look wonderful Can you tell me a little more about DDR? I’ve been thinking about it but don’t know enough to invest in it. thanks. I’ve posted more about DDR before, in a post with DDR or Dance Dance Revolution as the topic. I don’t mean to be plugging it so much, but I really love the thing. It’s FUN so I want to do it even when I absolutely do not want to exercise. Some people just don’t like it, and if you don’t find it fun then I wouldn’t advise getting it. Try going to a bowling alley, skate park, arcade, etc. someplace where they will have a DDR machine. Put in your 75 cents and play it on the easiest, slowest song you can find. If you find yourself enjoying it, then there ya go. I have a lot more fun playing at home with nobody watching because I was awful at it at first and felt self conscious with the machine booing at me and telling me I was missing so often. It’s also more fun if you play two-player. Only one person needs to pass the level and you each get to play another song without paying again… up to five songs. So you might want to tag a teenager to play with you so you can get more out of your money and try it out a little bit longer. My husband was much better than me because he’s just a good dancer and can keep a beat, and you have to step right when it tells you to, which typically is to the beat of the music. I bought the cheapest home mat I could find, I think it was $30, and it plugs directly into my TV. They also make them for xbox or playstation but then you need that equipment, plus the mat, plus the software. Those are typically better games with more features than the one I got. — Spring LC since 1/1/04 260/197/170 "Before" & "current" pics at link below: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sprgsnow/my_photos

We have the playstation DDR – the mat plugs into the playstation – then you put in the game cd. The mat has either 4 or 8 arrows on it – most of the ones I’ve seen are 4 -right, left, up, and down. As the music plays on your tv you will see arrows – you have to step on those arrows as they scroll by. In the beginner area – it is slower music and one arrow at a time – int he hard tunes – it is faster music and they throw combos at you of two feet at a time several in a row. It keeps track of how well you keep time with the music and how many in a row you get right. One short 2-3 minute song and you will get your heart rate up and start sweating. The kids play it at thte game rooms and the game rooms will sometimes set up tournaments. It is fun watching the teenagers play thinking – maybe someday I could do that – again. Yes, that was a very nice comment. It really surprised me to see it. Left it in my head for a few days. Especially coming from a guy as trim as Ig… makes it worth more in my book, if that makes sense. Spring – you look great!!! And your trick of tiding the shirt together at the back is surely working – look at you!! tiding… I’m guessing that was a typo for tying? I think in one or two of the pics I was wearing shirts that I sewed ties on to help cinch up the waist on old loose clothes instead of having to buy new clothes that didn’t look frumpy. Having gone down 10 sizes… I’m no longer wearing any of my older clothes. I have, however, gotten better at altering shirts and putting seams along the front & back to take in the waist that makes them more curvy so they are fitted to me instead of being all loose a my waist. I like the awareness it gives me of having a waist.

yes – it was a typo! I didn’t mean that you were wearing your old clothes, I meant exactly what you have said in here! I remember you said you often alter your shirts to make them fit your curves better. I agree with you on making the waist noticeable is a great thing – the elimination of the "tent" created by the mismatch of curves and shirts makes one feels much better. 10 sizes – that surely is amazing.

I bought the cheapest home mat I could find, I think it was $30, and it plugs directly into my TV. They also make them for xbox or playstation but then you need that equipment, plus the mat, plus the software. Those are typically better games with more features than the one I got.

The kids had a TV one, but the tunes drove me wild – I bought a PC one, with much better music.
Yes, that was a very nice comment. It really surprised me to see it. Left it in my head for a few days. Especially coming from a guy as trim as Ig… makes it worth more in my book, if that makes sense.
tiding… I’m guessing that was a typo for tying? I think in one or two of the pics I was wearing shirts that I sewed ties on to help cinch up the waist on old loose clothes instead of having to buy new clothes that didn’t look frumpy. Having gone down 10 sizes… I’m no longer wearing any of my older clothes. I have, however, gotten better at altering shirts and putting seams along the front & back to take in the waist that makes them more curvy so they are fitted to me instead of being all loose a my waist. I like the awareness it gives me of having a waist. — Spring LC since 1/1/04 260/197/170 "Before" & "current" pics at link below: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sprgsnow/my_photos

Better. His attitude has taken a brighter turn this past week. He’s less depressed and less angry, and the biggest difference is that he cares about what he eats. Lots of salad. He’s stuck to his 3x week workouts religiously (by far the biggest change for him) for the past 3 weeks in a row, and now he’s talking about going more often because he thinks daily would be better. His love handles are nearly gone… his stomach is flattening out… he’s looking quite handsome. Reading Dr. Bernstein’s book gave me a lot of hope. His (Dr. Bernstein’s) seems to be a far more strict diet than Atkins, but I would highly recommend the book to anyone with diabetes. — Spring LC since 1/1/04 260/197/170 "Before" & "current" pics at link below: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sprgsnow/my_photos

Thank you! Well, I am tall – 5′11" I’m not sure what I’ll look like when I reach my goal. Since I grew about 2 inches when I was 20 and already overweight… I haven’t seen my adult body at a normal weight. In the beginning, the diet was making such a difference in the inches just falling off, especially off my stomach (I was exercising, but no more than I had been before I started LC). Now, the exercise is slimming areas that used to be more jiggly. I added DDR to what I was already doing because it’s fun and I heard a personal trainer saying that if you really wanted to see progress in lost inches, to try cardio 2x a day for at least 20 min each time. I’m looking forward to when the snow melts and the weather warms up enough to go play tennis and be outdoors for more physical activity. — Spring LC since 1/1/04 260/197/170 "Before" & "current" pics at link below: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sprgsnow/my_photos

Since they cause gas…I’m concerned that if I continue my diet (which is doing great controlling the diabetes), the gas and rectal pressure will cause leakage more than with another diet type. I know that it’s different for every person but I did well by sticking to a few foods. We’re encouraged to use stool softeners ANYWAY so that’s OK…but I’m concerned about prolonging the incontinence due to gas pressure. Thanks for any thoughts. Ron B.
I only have leaking problems related to passing gas when I strain. If I wait fo rthe gas to pass more naturally, I don’t leak. Never had a problem with sneezing… Sandy K.

i always used 1/4 cup flour coked with 1/4 cup butter before adding 2.5 cups milk – cook till thick then add 1/2 cup grated parmesan, S & P. It thickens before the cheese but dunno how to get the same effect with out the flour in the beginning. would the soy flour work?

I personally think soy flour is kinda nasty as a thickener, unless there is a lot of other flavor to cover it up. Google the group and you’ll find lots of recipes for Alfredo sauce that don’t include a flour thickener. Xanthan or guar gum are good thickeners, but with more of a cornstarch texture than a flour one, and no carbs. You definitely don’t need to use flour in alfredo sauce. Also consider using egg yolks as a thickener in some kinds of sauces. Just handle them/heat them gently so they don’t curdle. HG
