Diet drinks in Thailand

Categories: Diabetes Diet

Question:

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to buy Diet Coke, or similar drinks  in Thailand.  Being on a sugar controlled diet makes it important to  me.  Glen In Bangkok and MAJOR tourist areas like Pattaya it is available, but you may have to look around. In other less tourist areas it is scarce. In Bangkok it is available in 711 stores everywhere, but the Pattaya and other privincial 711’s do not stock it. Friendship supermarket stocks Diet Coke and Pepsi max in Pattaya. If you can’y find it in the 711 type convenience stores, look in a supermarket like Lotus, Big C or Foodland. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Daisey you obviously missed an earlier post in which I stated there were diet cokes all over the place especially in the markets.  The subject had somewhat changed to establishments that had fountain drinks ~ in which case diet cokes were missing.   Since diet drinks seem to be most popular with weight watchers, I could see why the orientals, most being well within weight standards, never cared to take the diet route.  I have my weight within proper range but prefer the diet colas nonetheless. LinC There were no fountain diet cokes at McDonald’s or Hard Rock Cafe in Beijing during our recent trip there. The cokes at Hard Rock were in the traditional glass bottles such as we had in the US many years ago. LinC Well, you could have walked out on the street and found Diet Coke in a can in any one of the markets or small stands. It was not hard to find in even the small towns in China. I’m addicted to the stuff, and never had to go far to hunt it down.

Thank you for your little recap. But then again….you (and now me) seem to be commenting on China when the thread is Thailand. I don’t make it a habit of frequenting McDonalds and the Hard Rock, so I couldn’t comment on your observations directly.  I am sorry I was no explicit when saying "I never had to go far to hunt it down" that I did not specify for you this included most restaurants I went to.  I did not find it a problem in the least finding Diet Coke in any of the Chinese restaurants I went to….often on tap…certainly in a can.

Gee, try any of the 7-11s or AM/PM mini marts?  How about every grocery store in the Kingdom?  Every other little stand set on every street corner? The better question is how could you NOT find it?  11-13 Baht a can.  And I agree with another poster, never found it on tap.  Always in a can.

Glen They are relatively common.  OTOH it may make sense to bring your own artificial sweetener tablets or packets as they are not as common, and where they are, they tend to use brandnames (can’t remember any), so if you don’t know which brand a given restaurant uses, it takes a bit of pantomime to get it ;-(

All this talk about Coca Cola has me thirsting for a Limca, the finist carbonated beverage in the world. Oops, was that a troll? Apologies, edwardseco

Response:

Glen, Good clean cold bottled water is available everywhere in Thailand really cheap. (compared to US). Being a Diet Coke drinker myself, I found in my 2 trips to Thailand so far this year that I couldn’t always get it and I don’t remember ever finding it other than in a can.  Even at McDonalds they had other drinks from a soda fountain, but diet coke was in a can. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Judy, The big deal is that some people like to drink other than overpriced bottled tapwater. But that could be a last resource because green tea is not always easily available. Glen I’ve read the other responses and have to disagree with the availability of diet cokes around the world.  I have traveled with people who seem to feel they MUST have it.  And every meal the rest of us have to hear the request, the denial, the argument… My question is why not just drink bottled water or tea? Plain water has no sugar in it. What’s the big deal? Thanks Lin, I think you are right.  I have not visited Bangkok for over a decade. There was no Diet Coke available then.  It is the provinces which I am worried about. Glen – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I was in Bangkok last fall for several days.  I saw Diet Coke everywhere I went so you should have no problems, at least around the larger cities. That takes me back to the days when it was hard to find diet beverages. I recall that the Onassis daughter had a six pack flown in weekly in order to insure freshness by the family private jet. Does anybody recall the brand that she was fond of? I am not sure if it is still available. Regards, edwardseco
