Diabetic Needs Advice on Glucophage for Atkins' Food Plan

Categories: Diabetes Diet

Question:

My doctor is trying me on it starting today…on my way to get my prescription. FTR, I did take Avandia and tried Actos…didn’t do a thing for me even after a couple of months. I’d just like to not have to give myself injections anymore and since my bg has gone down to half of what it’s been, the metformin may just be my ticket. As my fat belly goes down I find the damn shots are hurting me more…hey, I’m not complaining about the loss of my belly:)) Thanks for everyone’s input. I’ll let you know after a couple of weeks if my experiment turns out well. I’m lucky to have a doctor that is pro-lc and also a pharmacist as well as a D.O. He actually listens to me and agrees most of the time. To Jerry, thanks for letting me know that metformin doesn’t interfere with the diet. If I stall while taking it I’ll have to look elsewhere for an excuse:)) To Susan, I did take Glucophage before but not the XR. If it doesn’t have an effect I’ll ask my doc to give me the regular stuff, thanks for the info! Jonathan, congrats on going without meds. Sounds .like you have it under control…I’ll be there soon! Please let me know what your experience has been if you are on Atkins’ and take Glucophage.

I started taking 1,000mg of Metformin a day (two doses) in May.  I’ve since lost 29 pounds and ended my 2 1/2-year stall. HTH, Myra

I’m on 500 mg Glucophage XR, starting with dinner tonight. I’m going to try to reduce my evening insulin (already down from 50 to 30 units) and see what happens. Bg was running near 330 before I went on Atkins, down to half or less with less than half the insulin. If nothing else, this diet has helped my diabetes enormously! I’m so hoping to not have to take insulin and at the rate I’ve been going it’s probable. My doctor is as happy as I am about it. BTW, there is a deal for a free month of Glucophage XR if you have not been on it. I didn’t believe it myself. Printed the coupon off my computer from their website and sure enough, my pharmacy honored it:) Here is the address http://www.glucophage.com BTW, Myra, you are an inspiration! Nancy 189/177/139

Avandia is the only blood sugar medication that worked for me that I could take.  I’m allergic to Glucophage and all drugs in that family.  They give me nasty skin irritations ranging from hives to little prickly things all over my hands that make them feel like they’re on fire. Avandia works a little differently.  While you take it, (and after having taken it for a while) it makes additional insulin transports so that your body uses the insulin that it does make more efficiently.  I was on it for a while, but have been off for 2 months now.  I seem to have *no* diabetic symptoms anymore.  I even have healthy glucose tolerance, which I haven’t had in at least 8 years, to my knowledge. God bless low carb :) Jonathan – 402/235/190 – http://home.austin.rr.com/linkless/images/me/progress.html

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – OK, my bg (blood glucose) has gone down a lot but not enough for me to stop all meds. I’ve been doing this diet close to a month and have lost 14 pounds but I’m stalled now. I watch my carbs religiously and input into fitday.com…when it’s up. Can the insulin be stalling me and could that be why I am not in ketosis? I listened to some posters that take Glucophage (metformin hydrochloride) and have asked my doctor for a prescription. I used to take it before I went on insulin but it gave me "the runs". With this diet I should have no worries about that:) Please let me know what your experience has been if you are on Atkins’ and take Glucophage. I’ve asked my doctor to prescribe Glucophage XL in the 500 mg tablet. Thanks. Nancy ~the pink lady~ 189/177/139

I’m a T2 diabetic on an Atkins-like diet and take 1500 mg/day of metformin. It has no effect one way or other on my weight loss. But if you’ve only been on the diet for a month, then you cannot possibly be experiencing a true stall, which is defined as 4 or more weeks of no weight loss and/or no inches lost. — Jerry Wilson http://LowCarbDiet.us
