Carbs
Question:
Is it the lower the carbohydrate that food/drink contains the better, and what foods contain the most? CC-)

Find a cheap book that list carb values of foods, I for example can eat a total of about 20 gr carb per meal not including "free" vegetables – free vegetables are basically those that have no or low starch. Starchy veges are mostly root veges, potatoes, parsnips, carrots etc plus corn, pumpkin. I can eat a lot of carrots though, it will be an individual thing.

You’ve taken the first step in being honest with yourself and in posting here. Sounds like you’ve already beaten yourself up quite a bit so we aren’t going to shout at you – promise! — Emma http://altgallery.shows.it The Chocolate Monster http://chocmonster.rules.it

I go to the appointments every 6 months. Anyway I have decided to have another attempt to lose weight…and get my sugars under control. I have been recording myy bg at 22mmol/l in the mornings and theyve been like that for about 6 months (since my last appointment). I wrote to the diabetes uk careline people and theyve told me to go and see my gp (but I feel guilty cause i havent been taking the pills) Now my question (sorry for the boring intro). Diabetes Uk sent me a leaflet telling me to replace my fatty food with plently of carbs rice, potatos, bread and the like. But I do lurk here (the only good thing I do) and everyone keeps selling the idea of low carb diets. What do I do…? some one advise me cause I really really low.. Id say at the bottom, I feel ill, I dont know where to turn and I get conflicting advice… BTW dont flame me please you’ll push me over the edge…I have resolved to try again..I need some advice and I know from reading the post that your a decent bunch of guys… Robert. Hi Robert, We don`t flame anybody here unless they is a troll, or a spammer, but you are not, so don`t worry about that. I am real glad that you decided to delurk, I only been about here about 7 months since delurking myself. This is easily the best diabetes ng. Not much conflicting advice here about diet. Cut your carbs, change saturated fat to unsaturated. For example, grill food instead of frying it, lots of vegetables. What pills are you taking, I wonder? Every little bit of info helps, you know. Last, as much exercise as you can manage, you don`t have to be Schwarzenegger, but build them muscles up a bit, coz they burn off glucose more efficiently than fatty tisue, and they use insulin more eficient, too. Welcome, we are glad to have you here!
Hi Robert, nothing extra to add to Alan’s wise words at the moment. But you’ve found a very useful group, stick around and it will certainly be worth your while. Nigel

But the BG was down to 12 prior to my evening meal. Went out and bought a load of fruit at lunch but reading another post I dont think I should have that either. Bit of a visious cycle Im afraid… I feel knackered, cant be bothered to cook, keep junk get depressed and feel knackered again. Who said it was fun cooking for one… it isnt true. Going to do some weights tonight, see if some exercise will improve my spirits…is it safe to exercise whilst I have high sugars, I read somewhere that i should get them down first? anyway, nice to meet you and thanks for your reply. best regards Robert
Hi Robert, I find cooking for one is ok, but then I like to experiment with food anyway. As far as that exercise is concerned, until that bp and bg come down I think (just my opinion) you should take it slow`n`easy for a while. United_Kingom_Prospective_Diabetes_Study the biggest study so far conducted, states clearly that good bp is of equal imortance with good bg. The *merkin* equivalent is Diabetes_Control_Complication_Trial, if you respect merkin opinion they say that the same is true. One of the more common complications with the beast is cardiovascular problems – and that is why you exercise gently to start with. I firmly repeat, just my opinion. — Al, Melton Mowbray, uk, LADA dx Jan97 Control basal/Beef lente bolus/Novorapid

Hi Robert, Some people don`t get a prob with bananas, maybe you will be one. Besides, you CAN have a banana, just cut the other carbs for the day, or take a short brisk walk immediately after the banana. — Al, Melton Mowbray, uk, LADA dx Jan97 Control basal/Beef lente bolus/Novorapid

Hiya Robert. Been reading the other posts and there are a lot of good pointers there for you to take on board. The important thing now is that YOU take IT by the throat. If you caught someone stealing your car, you’d batter the granny out of him/her and take it back. Diabetes left unchecked is like that. It steals your health, so grab it by the throat and take back your wellbeing. It’s not impossible. It can be hard sometimes to hit that perfect balance, and hard to keep it. It can also be a lot of fun and immensely rewarding when you tame the beast. Rewarding in many different ways. Such as your overall health being better than it was BEFORE diabetes came into the picture! Believe me, it happens! Looking at a 5.5 on the meter first thing in the morning is a good start to the day! One thing the medical establishment isn’t good at is providing peer support. That’s where this group comes in. Support is written in the group name and in the group’s very loose charter. Use it to ask ANY question you want, or just to post how you are doing or even sound off if you feel pissed off. Ask for opinions, join in threads, treat the group as friends who are there for you. The only people who get flamed here are spammers and dickheads who are just after causing arguments. Trolls in other words. So forget what’s happened previously and start with the tablets again. That’s the first step towards grabbing the fucker by the throat and taking back your health. And we’ll all be rooting for you. HTH Ratty — A BTOpenworld Asylum Seeker ratty at flyingrat dot net

I think you have a positive attitude to dealing with your problems but 22 mmol/l fasting BG level definitely needs professional medical support. A new diet may be a help but I think you need more than that. I can empathise with your embarrassment at not having gone back or followed your previous treatment advice. Its a bit like putting off going to the dentist and having to admit you haven’t been for some time. They’re fairly constructive about this as they’ve seen it all before. Summon up your courage and make an appointment. Do it tomorrow before the glucose poisoning starts to show. Bill

) Low carb is deff the way to go…note ‘low’ carb not ‘no’ carb. the crucial thing is to tailor your intake of carbs to your output of energy if you do a half marathon every day you need loads of carbs…if you spend all day at a computer you need somewhat less — eric www.ericjarvis.co.uk "Hey Lord don’t ask me questions There ain’t no answer in me"

You and me both, but half a small banana will jack me from 2 to 5 in 15 minutes. Not good if you don’t need a rise like that. Banana’s are medicine:-) I am back on the pills today, I cant explain why I dont take them…
You’re not on your own Rob. It’s a big problem for all sorts of people with all sorts of conditions. I know i must. I confess I was a bit down yesterday, can be hard on your own..never was any good at self control. I’ll just have to nag myself…..

D’ya know I think the amount of carbs consumed actually contributes to depression – I say that cos I had a Chinese on Satuday night, come Monday morning I was feeling pretty down and depressed – I still feel strange you know that wooley feeling, feeling that something is covering your eyes and you are fighting to see through it. I swear it’s cos of the carbs knocking the bg
