Carb target
Question:
Hi. I’m trying to keep my carbs down and starting to measure foods. Is there a carb target I should be aiming for – or maximum level? Not yet diagnosed, just diet and exercise. Thanks for your help. Steve

I can’t give a figure and say don’t go above x % carbs, its really what works for you to keep the blood glucose levels down and is still healthy in the long term. One approach (if your not under weight) is to slightly reduce portion sizes of high carb items like bread, pots, pasta, rice … a little. You need to monitor the results of what you do as well though if it doesn’t work more drastic action would be needed – maybe ultimately drugs to help if d&e fails. Don’t forget the exercise part either it makes a big difference for me. Its the type of carbs you eat too – try replacing some of the potatoes, white bread & sugar you eat with pasta, granary bread, fruit & beans all of which are still sources of carb but are converted to blood glucose slower than the potatoes, white bread & sugar. Measure yor **desired** weight in kilos, multiply by 1.4, round up and that is the target for the day in gm. Al.
Thanks. So that’s about 93 grams for 10.5 stone ( 66.678 078 390 000 0 kilos). Steve

It does not have to be the exact same number everyday, some days you feel like eating a little more, some a little less. Average the 93 gm and see what happens, you might need to adjust up or down. No certainties with the beast, but at first you will probably be overwhelmed. Remember you got a life to live first, and control the diabetes second, and everything else after that. Al.

Thanks. Now I understand – spread out the effect! Steve
